SEOUL — Some 500 people attended the Ministry of Knowledge Economy’s annual 2011 Korea Technology Award ceremony held on December 8 at the Intercontinental Seoul, including Minister Hong Seok-woo as well as chairman of the Knowledge Economy committee of the National Assembly Kim Young-hwan.

A total of 34 of all commercialized products in 2010 were recognized for outstanding performance and contributions to domestic industries. Among them, ten were awarded for exceptional impact on their fields.

Bo-ryung Pharmaceutical’s new antihypertensive drug ‘Kanarb’ won the grand prize, which decreases blood pressure by more than 20% than the existing ARB medicine Losartan. Others notable innovations included SK Innovation’s high-quality lubricant base oil catalyst technology, LG Chemical’s original technology for 3D FPR production and Hyundai Motor’s Theta Turbo GDi engine.

The Korea Technology Award is Korea’s foremost ceremony that recognizes and promotes excellence and innovation in industry and technology.

Ten Technological Breakthroughs by Korean Companies in 2011

The top ten technology breakthroughs by Korean companies were awarded for exceptional impact on their fields at the 2011 Korea Technology Award ceremony on December 8.  They are New Medicine ‘Kanarb’ of Boryung Pharmaceutical, high-quality lubricant base oil catalyst technology of SK Innovation, 3D FPR production technology of LG Chem, Theta Turbo GDi Engine of Hyundai Motor, an open-type web-based smart TV of Samsung Electronics, printing electronic equipment technology for 20㎛ narrow line width mass production technology of SFA, ultrahigh-intensity optical film for LCDs of LMS, inosculation vaccine production technology for preventing bacterial encephalomeningitis of LG Life Science, cinema 3D smart TV of LG Electronics and Hybrid Enterprise DBMS Products and Technology of Altibase.

*New Medicine “Kanarb” of Boryung Pharmaceutical: This tablet has merits of ARB drugs which solved negative side effects such as a dry cough and edema while improving their weak effects. This drug is very effective at lowering blood pressure.  

*High-quality lubricant base oil catalyst technology of SK Innovation: This technology produces high-quality lubricants. This technological breakthrough is based on zeolite.

*3D FPR production technology of LG Chem: This technology is used to mass-produce FPR (Film-type Patterned Retarder) to realize 3D TV with optical film on TV screens.

*Theta Turbo GDi Engine of Hyundai Motor: This new engine has world-class performance and fuel efficiency (maximum output: 271ps, maximum torque: 37.2kgf.m). This technology downsized V6 engines into I4 engines. 

*Open-type web-based smart TV of Samsung Electronics: This TV is compatible with the world’s first smart TV eco system and realizes smart TV technology that supports an open development environment.

*Electronic printing equipment technology for 20㎛ narrow line width mass production technology by SFA: This is an electronic printing method which is used to develop an offset printer with highly precise patterns.  

*Ultrahigh-intensity optical film for LCDs of LMS: This technology realizes a double-structure prism sheet which combines a prism structure and an MLA (Micro Lens Arry) structure and minimizes image distortion.

*An inoculation vaccine production technology for preventing bacterial encephalo-meningitis of LG Life Science: New product from LG Life Sciences, “Euhib Inj.” is the first vaccine to be developed with second-generation conjugate technology of polysaccharide antigens and tetanus toxoids inKorea,  offering effective protection from invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b(Hib) disease in infants.

*Cinema 3D smart TV of LG Electronics: This smart TV distinguishes itself from other 3D TVs with advanced FPR (Film-type Patterned Retarder) glasses.

* Hybrid Enterprise DBMS products and technology by Altibase: A DBMS (database management system) is a software package with computer programs that control the creation, maintenance, and the use of a database. Altibase HDB is a hybrid relational DBMS that delivers extreme speed while supporting large data sets.
