SEOUL, KOREA - For the past 30 years, the market capitalization of KOSPI shares has increased 349 times, with the transaction volume rising 722 times. According to the Korea Exchange on January 3, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index began on January 4, 1983 at 122.52 but grew more than 15 times to 1997.05 on December 31, 2012.
A Korea Exchange official said, "KOSPI has shown third highest growth rate among exchanges in major economies following those of Hong Kong and Taiwan." The market value during the three decades has increased 1,154.3 trillion won as of the end of 2012 from 3.3 trillion won 30 years ago. The daily transaction volume has risen to 4,823.2 billion won from 6.7 billion won. The number of companies listed on the exchange has more than doubled to 784 from 334.
By sector, the electric and electronics category rose 85 times, followed by steel and metals (48 times), chemical (34), and food and beverage (34). In contrast, construction stopped short of rising only 6.6 percent for 30 years.

30세 된 코스피, 시가총액 349배로
지난 30년 동안 코스피지수 구성 종목의 시가총액은 349배, 거래대금은 722배 성장한 것으로 나타났다.
3일 한국거래소에 따르면 4일로 30주년을 맞는 코스피지수는 1983년 1월4일 122.52로 출발해 지난해 말 기준 1997.05로 15배 이상 상승했다. 거래소 측은 “주요국 증시 가운데 홍콩 대만에 이어 세 번째로 높은 상승률을 보였다”고 설명했다. 시가총액은 3조3000억원에서 지난해 말 1154조3000억여원으로, 하루평균 거래대금은 67억원에서 4조8232억원으로 급증했다. 상장사 수는 334개에서 784개로 두 배 이상 늘어났다. 역대 최대 상승률을 기록한 때는 한·미 통화스와프 협정이 체결된 2008년 10월30일로 하루 만에 11.95%(115.75포인트) 뛰었다. 반면 미국 9·11테러 다음날인 2001년 9월12일에는 12.02%(64.97포인트) 급락했다.
업종별 지수는 삼성전자가 대표하는 전기전자업종이 약 85배 상승했으며 철강금속(48배) 화학(34배) 음식료품(34배) 등이 뒤를 이었다. 반면 건설업은 6.6%로 상승률이 가장 낮았고 금융업도 두 배 상승에 그쳤다. 업종별 시가총액 역시 전기전자 기계 운송업종이 포함된 조립금속기계업종이 16.2%에서 42.2%로 확대되며 가장 높은 비중을 차지하게 됐다.
국내 주식 투자 인구는 전체 인구 대비 1.7%(68만2000여명)에서 10.6%(528만4000여명)로 늘어 국민 10명 중 1명이 투자에 참여하는 시대가 됐다.
