SEOUL, KOREA - NHN, the Korean company that operates the nation’s most successful search engine portal Naver, plans to establish a new mobile-dedicated business unit as part of its effort to better cope with the fast-changing mobile market.
NHN set this year’s motto as mobile first, showing a strong desire to repeat the glory it achieved in the computer area.
The mobile unit will become a 100-percent-owned subsidiary of NHN. About 200 employees who have been responsible for mobile business at NHN will be transferred to the mobile unit.
The mobile unit will have a mission of improving the competitiveness of NHN’s existing mobile services, including SNS me2day and BAND, while launching new mobile services.
At present, NHN commands a market share of more than 70 percent in the computer area. In the mobile area, however, NHN lags far behind other leaders. According to the analysis of mobile app users by Korean Clicks in November 2012, NHN was ranked No. 10. Google’s app market Android Market ranked No. 1, followed by KakaoTalk.

NHN, 올해는 '모바일 퍼스트'…모바일 전담 자회사 세운다
포털 네이버를 운영하는 NHN이 모바일 사업 전담 조직을 만든다.
급변하는 모바일 환경에 대응하기 위해서다. 특히 올해 비전을 '모바일 퍼스트(First)'로 정하면서 PC에서의 영광을 모바일에서도 재현하겠다는 의지를 보이고 있다.
16일 관련 업계에 따르면 모바일 전담 조직은 100% 자회사 형태가 될 것으로 알려졌다. 또 현재 NHN에서 모바일 관련 사업을 진행했던 내부 인력 200여명이 자회사로 이동한다. 다음달 정기 이사회에서 최종 결정을 내린다.
모바일 전담조직을 통해선 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS) 미투데이와 밴드 등 기존의 모바일 서비스 경쟁력을 키우고 신규 서비스를 내놓는다.
NHN은 PC에서는 검색 점유율 70%를 넘나들고 있지만 모바일에선 상황이 다르다.
지난해 11월 코리안클릭이 모바일 애플리케이션(앱) 이용자를 분석한 결과 네이버는 10위에 머물렀다. 구글의 앱 장터인 안드로이드마켓이 1위, 카카오톡이 2위를 차지하며 네이버에 크게 앞섰다.
소비자들의 발길이 PC에서 모바일로 옮겨오고 있다는 점도 NHN의 '모바일 퍼스트'에 영향을 끼친 것으로 풀이된다.
