SEOUL, KOREA - A 300-billion-won private equity fund to support small-size enterprises in their quest to enter the Middle East market will set sail. The state-run Korea Finance Corp. said on January 17 that it would form a cooperative fund jointly with sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East to lend a helping hand to small businesses while encouraging investment to these firms from wealthy investors in the region.
To that end, the Korea Finance Corp. has signed an agreement with the Gulf Investment Corp., a sovereign wealth fund created by joint investment of six Gulf states including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The fund will invest in new business areas such as renewable energy resources, offshore plants, information technology, and fusion industries. A Korea Finance Corp. official said, "With the cooperative fund, we will be able to get a wealth of information on local business opportunities."

정책금융공사는 중소기업의 중동 진출을 지원하고 유망 중소·중견기업에 오일 달러를 유치하기 위해 이슬람권 국부펀드들과 함께 상반기 안으로 3000억원 수준의 ‘한·이슬람 협력펀드’를 조성할 계획이라고 17일 밝혔다.
정책금융공사는 이를 위해 사우디아라비아 아랍에미리트 등 걸프만 6개국이 출자해 설립한 국부펀드인 걸프투자회사(GIC)와 업무협약(MOU)을 맺었다. 이 펀드는 신재생에너지, 플랜트, 정보기술(IT) 융·복합 산업에 우선 투자할 방침이다. 정책금융공사 관계자는 “현지 기관들로부터 사업 정보를 소개받는 기회도 생길 것”이라고 설명했다.
