SEOUL, KOREA – The Korean content market is the 10th largest in the world. Though its ranking fell one notch from a year, Korea is still right behind Brazil packed with a population of 200 million. According to the 2012 Seound Half Survey on Overseas Content Markets, issued by Korea Creative Contents Agency (KOCCA), the Korean content market was valued at USD 38.5 billion in 2011, up 4.2 % from 2010.
The survey looked into the movie, broadcasting, game, music and publishing sectors in major 20 nations. Propped up by emerging nations like China and Brazil, the global content market ascended 4.9% year-on-year to KRW 1.6 trillion, marking two consecutive years of growth.
By sector, the knowledge information sector, which includes the downloading of financial information and knowledge information, zoomed up at the fastest pace of 9.1% year-on-year, followed by broadcasting (5%↑), advertising (3.6%↑), games (2.1%↑), characters (1.5%↑) and movies (0.6%↑). Meanwhile, publishing and animation contracted 0.9% and 2.1% respectively.
The survey predicted that the content market will grow, on average, by 5.7% annually to reach KRW 2.1 trillion by 2016. In view of population size, purchasing power, exports, copyright protection and perceptions of Korea, the survey picked the US and Japan as the two most promising destinations for Korea’s content exports.
