SEOUL, KOREA - An innovative set-top box that allows users to change the layouts of TV display just like in smartphones or desktop wallpapers has been developed. The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute said on January 31 that it has developed HTML5-based smart TV set-top box jointly with Kaon Media.
The core of the new device is the technology that allows users to lay out display on websites. The set-top box will provide access to real-time TV broadcasts, on-demand widgets, portals, and Twitters on a single display and allows the user to control image sizes as she sees fit.
It can also identify family members when a user logs in, enabling advertisers to deliver individualized ads on home screen. Also, as it is based on HTML5, TV makers can participate in the development of apps.
ETRI and Kaon Media also developed a “mirror-type smart remote controller” which shows the same images delivered on home screens. By manipulating the remote controller, users can control home screen without looking at them.
