SEOUL, KOREA - A world’s renowned telecommunications service provider plans for a worldwide interconnection of ‘joyn’, a next generation integrated communications platform.
When accomplishing the plan, it would be possible for telecommunications service subscribers around the world to communicate each other, sending text messages, chatting and exchanging photos. Telecommunications companies are eager to take the lead back from KakaoTalk and What’s APP in the communication area.
A source from the communications business said 6th that leading telecommunications companies from around the world will be discussing the global interconnection of ‘joyn’ at ‘Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013’ to be held in Barcelona, Spain on 25th.
“We will have a meeting with foreign communications service providers about the interworking of ‘joyn’ at MWC. ‘joyn’ is developed with standard base, and since all major global communications companies provide the service, users are able to communicate with each other regardless of their nations and service providers,” says an official from SK telecom.
‘joyn’ is standard based service. And it wouldn’t take that long to realize its interworking.
모바일메신저 `조인` 외국 통신사도 조인
세계 주요 통신사가 차세대 통합커뮤니케이션 플랫폼으로 키우는 `조인(joyn)`의 글로벌 연동을 추진한다. 성사되면 외국 통신사 가입자 간에 전화번호만 알면 문자와 채팅, 사진 교환 등 커뮤니케이션할 수 있다. 카카오톡과 와츠앱 등에 내준 커뮤니케이션 주도권을 통신사가 되찾아올 수 있을지 주목된다.
6일 통신 업계에 따르면 오는 25일 스페인 바로셀로나에서 개막하는 `모바일 월드 콩그레스(MWC) 2013`에서 세계 주요 통신사가 모여 조인의 글로벌 연동을 논의한다.
SK텔레콤 고위 관계자는 “MWC에서 해외 사업자와 조인 연동 관련 회의를 한다”면서 “조인은 표준 기반으로 개발됐으며, 주요 글로벌사업자가 모두 서비스하기 때문에 연동만 되면 나라와 통신사에 상관없이 커뮤니케이션할 수 있다”고 말했다.
조인은 표준 기반 서비스다. 연동에 대한 사업자 의견만 모이면 실제로 구현에 걸리는 시일은 길지 않을 것으로 예상된다. 연내 연동이 가능할 것으로 점쳐졌다.
지금은 카카오톡이나 라인, 와츠앱 등 서드파티가 개발한 앱으로 외국 통신사 가입자와 커뮤니케이션이 가능하다. 하지만 상호 간에 같은 앱을 설치해야 하는 것이 제약요인이다. 특히 나라마다 선호하는 앱이 다른 것도 한계다.
반면에 조인은 통신사가 제공하는 서비스인 만큼 접근성이 높다. 처음부터 표준 기반으로 개발돼 글로벌 확장성이 높은 것도 장점이다.
세계 주요 이통사들은 지난 2008년부터 세계이동통신사업자연합회(GSMA)를 중심으로 조인 표준규격과 상용화를 준비해 왔다. 우리나라를 비롯해 미국 메트로PCS, 스페인 모비스타·오렌지·보다폰, 독일 도이치텔레콤·보다폰 등이 지난해 RCS 서비스를 출시했다. 영국, 이탈리아, 프랑스 등 다수 국가의 이통사도 상용서비스를 준비 중이다.
조인 서비스가 아직 다양하지 않아 이용률이 낮지만, 향후 서비스가 진화하면 달라질 것으로 업계는 기대했다. 조만간 PC 버전도 내놓는다. HD보이스 등 올(ALL)-IP 서비스와 결합한 부가 서비스도 다양하게 선보인다. 통신사 한 관계자는 “조인 글로벌 연동을 해도 당장은 조인을 상용화한 나라가 많지 않고, 해외 LTE 보급률이 낮아 한계가 있다”며 “하지만 LTE 보급이 늘어나고, 조인 기능을 업그레이드하는 하반기에 조인이 훨씬 강력해질 것”이라고 예상했다.
