CAMBRIDGE, UK -Energy harvesting - harvesting abundant energy from the environment to power small devices or assist larger devices - has secured a sure foot-hold in building and industrial markets, powering wireless sensors to improve efficiency, reduce costs and increase automation. It has been a slower adoption than hoped; the enabling technology building blocks are available but the lack of adopter knowledge and challenging target price points have to be addressed. This is successfully happening through many projects, from pilots to large scale implementations, which are proving the return on investment.

Two main sectors stand out having demonstrated strong ROI:

• Buildings - particularly public ones where the users do not pay for energy bills, and therefore do not reliably shut off lighting and air conditioning systems to preserve energy.
• Industrial environments - such as oil and gas and manufacturing where wired infrastructure can be expensive.

At the world's largest event on energy harvesting and storage, “Energy Harvesting & Storage Europe 2013” (www.IDTechEx.com/ehEurope) - hosted by IDTechEx and held on April 17-18 in Berlin, Germany - attendees will learn from users and system integrators covering their experiences and needs first hand, such as from GE, Shell, Osram and ABB. The international conference and exhibition will feature more than 50 presentations with 350 attendees and more than 35 exhibitors. It will cover the latest technology developments and cover the roadmaps of how the energy harvesting market will grow from $700 million in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2017.
