SEOUL, KOREA – A government-backed resource recycling site (www.re.or.kr), launched in December of last year by the Ministry of Environment of Korea, is giving impetus to the recycling of disused and secondhand goods. Though the resource recycling site has been open for less than three months, its membership has ballooned to a point where officials are pondering over a buildup of servers.
On Wednesday, the resource recycling site said its accumulated membership surpassed 22,000. The number of transactions also broke the 10,000 mark, with KRW 70 million in trade volume.
The resource recycling site is an online marketplace, set up by the Ministry of Environment and run by Korea Environment Corporation (KECO), where anyone can easily sell and buy secondhand and disused items. In contrast to other online cafes trading in secondhand goods, the resource recycling site deals in general consumers’ secondhand goods as well as recyclable industrial waste. Besides, since the site is run by a government agency, it is relatively free from fear factors like online scams. Thus, the number of its users is growing rapidly.

순환자원거래소, 중고품 재활용 효과 톡톡
지난해 12월 정식 서비스를 개시한 순환자원거래소가 폐기물 및 중고품 재활용 활성화에 기여하고 있다. 서비스 개시 3개월이 채 안됐지만 예상을 넘는 회원이 몰리면서 벌써부터 서버 증설을 검토하고 있다.
한국환경공단은 순환자원거래소 가입 누적 회원 수가 2만2000명을 넘어섰다고 6일 밝혔다. 물품 거래횟수도 1만건을 돌파해 7000만원 상당의 거래를 기록했다.
순환자원거래소는 폐기물과 중고물품을 누구나 손쉽게 사고 팔 수 있는 온라인 장터로 환경부가 구축하고 환경공단이 운영•관리를 맡고 있다. 다른 중고물품 매매 온라인 카페 등과 달리 일반 소비자들의 중고물품은 물론 재자원화가 가능한 산업폐기물 등도 거래품으로 등록되고 있다. 정부기관이 운영하는 공신력있는 서비스로 거래 사기와 같은 불안요인이 적어 이용자들이 빠르게 늘고 있다.
환경공단은 당초 3만2000명 용량으로 서버를 구축했지만, 회원 가입이 절정단계에 이르면서 설비를 증설한다는 계획이다. 실제로 순환자원 거래소는 지난해 9월부터 정식서비스가 시작하기까지 3달동안의 거래횟수는 1100여건에 불과했지만, 서비스 개시 후 2달 동안은 10배에 가까운 거래가 이루어졌다.
물품등록 건수는 2600여건 수준으로 부족한 부분이 있지만 설비 증설 이후부터 본격적인 홍보작업으로 이용자와 물품등록 확대에 나설 계획이다. 아직은 물품 중계 단계에 머물고 있는 기업간 폐기물 거래도 거래물량, 기간, 운송차량 분류 등의 세부 카테고리를 추가해 사이트 내에서 원스톱 거래가 가능하도록 업그레이드 할 예정이다.
환경공단 관계자는 “서비스 초기로 아직은 순환자원거래소에 대한 인지도가 높지 않은 편”이라며 “지자체와 환경단체들과의 공조로 홍보활동을 전개해 집 안에 잠자고 있는 중고물품들이 거래소에 나올 수 있도록 할 것”이라고 말했다.
