SEOUL, KOREA – Lotte Chemical, a South Korean petrochemical company, will launch into the synthetic rubber business in collaboration with Japanese companies.
Lotte Chemical, formerly known as Honam Petrochemical Corp, said Wednesday it will set up a joint venture company with Japanese chemical firm Ube Industries and Japanese trading firm Mitsubishi Corp. to manufacture and sell BR (polybutadiene rubber) and build a plant in Malaysia.
Lotte Chemical plans to start operating the plant next year, which will have an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of BR.
Ube Industries will provide related technologies, while Lotte Chemical Titan Holding, a Malaysian unit of Lotte Chemical, will supply butadiene, a raw material for polybutadiene rubber.
Polybutadien rubber, which excels in wear resistance and heat resistance, is usually used for vehicle tires and shoes. The polybutadien rubber market is anticipated to grow rapidly in Asia. Lotte Chemical mentioned that this new venture is expected to create synergy with its existing products.

롯데케미칼, 말레이시아에 합성고무공장 짓는다
롯데케미칼이 일본 기업과 손잡고 합성고무 사업에 진출한다.
롯데케미칼은 일본 우베흥산, 미쓰비시상사 등과 폴리부타디엔고무(BR) 제조•판매를 위한 합작회사를 설립하고 말레이시아에 공장을 짓는다고 13일 밝혔다.
내년 가동 예정으로 연산 5만톤 규모다. 우베흥산이 기술을, 롯데케미칼의 말레이시아 현지법인인 `롯데케미칼 타이탄`이 원료인 부타디엔을 제공한다. 우베흥산은 범용수지, 합성고무, 정밀화학제품을 생산 판매하는 일본의 석유화학 회사다.
폴리부타디엔고무는 천연고무에 비해 내열성•내마모성이 뛰어나 타이어, 신발 등에 주로 사용된다. 최대 시장인 아시아를 중심으로 고속성장이 예상되는 산업이다. 롯데케미칼은 이번 신사업 진출로 사업다각화와 함께 기존 제품과의 시너지 효과도 기대된다고 설명했다.
롯데케미칼 관계자는 “타이탄을 사업을 기반으로 한 말레이시아 투자를 본격화 할 예정”이라며 “새롭게 생산될 폴리부타디엔고무는 기존 범용 제품과 더불어 신성장동력으로서의 역할을 할 것”이라고 말했다.
