SEOUL, KOREA – LS Cable & System has become the first Korean wire and cable maker to enter the Latin American submarine cable market. As South America has seen increases in power consumption and demand for cables owing to its time-worn power grids, plans for numerous cable projects seem to be in the pipeline.
On Wednesday, LS Cable & System said it won a KRW 200 billion won deal to supply submarine cables for a Venezuelan state project.
Under the deal with Corpoelec, Venezuela's state-run power company, LS Cable & System will provide 230 kV extra-high-voltage submarine cables to cover the 40km distance between Chacopata, Sucre and Margarita Island. The entire submarine cable project is worth about KRW 300 billion, approximately 200 billion of which went to LS Cable & System.
LS Cable & System said its excellent manufacturing and construction technologies were highly recognized since it will take charge of supply, installation and post-construction testing.

LS전선, 남미 해저 케이블 시장 첫 진출
LS전선이 국내 전선 업계 최초로 남미 해저 케이블 시장에 진출한다. 남미는 전력사용 증가, 전력망 노후화로 케이블 수요가 늘고 있어 앞으로 활발한 추가 수주가 기대된다.
LS전선은 베네수엘라 국영전력공사와 230㎸급 초고압 해저 케이블 공급•시공 계약을 맺었다고 13일 밝혔다. 케이블은 40㎞ 거리의 수크레주 차꼬빠따와 마르가리따 섬을 연결하게 된다. 총 공사 규모는 약 3000억원이며, LS전선은 이 중 약 2000억원의 매출을 차지한다.
LS전선은 케이블 공급•설치와 공사 후 테스트까지 맡음으로써 우수한 생산 기술과 시공 능력을 인정받았다고 평가했다. 윤재인 LS전선 영업본부장은 “유럽, 중동에 이어 남미 시장에도 진출한 것은 세계 최고 수준의 해저 케이블 업체로 자리매김했다는 증거”라며 “고부가가치 제품을 앞세워 신규 시장 개척에 최선을 다할 것”이라고 말했다.
