SEOUL, KOREA – A consortium consisting of Daewoo International, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and KT has won a KRW 23 billion project to build a high-speed Internet network in the state of Podlaskie, Poland.
Under the deal, KT will install 860 kilometers of optical fiber cables in the state of Podlaskie and upgrade the region’s average Internet speed to 100 megabits per second for the next two years and six months.
The contract came as part of the “Digital Poland” Project, a government-led program funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to promote the Internet environment in the eastern region of the country. KT’s winning of this deal has laid the groundwork for KT to expand its presence in other Eastern European countries in the future.
Joining hands with Daewoo International, KOTRA and a local partner, KT has taken pains to clinch this deal since last year.
“KT has become the first Korean telecom operator to win an ERDF project. We had competed fiercely against formidable European telecom companies to win this project,” said Kim, Hong-Jin, President of KT G&E (Global & Enterprise).

KT-대우인터, 폴란드 초고속인터넷망 구축 수주
KT(대표 이석채)와 대우인터내셔널(대표 이동희)은 폴란드 포들라스키에(Podlaskie) 주정부가 발주한 230억원 규모 `초고속인터넷망 구축 프로젝트`를 수주했다고 24일 밝혔다.
이번 계약으로 KT는 올해 3월부터 앞으로 2년 6개월 동안 860㎞ 규모 광케이블과 백본망을 공급, 현재 수 Mbps급 저속인터넷망 환경을 100Mbps급 초고속인터넷망으로 구축할 예정이다.
폴란드 초고속인터넷망 구축 사업은 `디지털 폴란드` 정책을 실현하는 견인차 역할을 하게 될 것으로 기대된다. 이번 프로젝트 수주로 KT는 향후 중동부 유럽국가 초고속인터넷망 사업 확대 교두보를 확보했다.
KT는 대우인터내셔널, KOTRA와 함께 현지 파트너와 컨소시엄을 구성해 지난해부터 프로젝트 수주에 노력해왔다.
김홍진 KT G&E 부문 사장은 “유럽지역개발기금(ERDF) 프로젝트를 국내 기업이 통신 분야에서 수주한 최초 사례로 유럽 유수 통신관련기업과 치열한 글로벌 수주경쟁 속에서 얻은 성공이라 의미가 있다”며 “이를 기반으로 인접국가로 사업을 확장해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
