Seoul, Korea - The fire broke out at Heesung Electronics’ Nanjing Plant in China has caused a panic in the procurement of backlight unit (BLU) in LG Display. Apple is also impacted by the fire, because Heesung had been producing BLUs for iPads.
According to the sources in China on the 14th, Apple has formed a team to assess the size of damage Heesung’s Chinese plant suffered and started to seek for an alternative vendor who would make up for the short supply.
A fire broke out at the Heesung plant on the 10th last week, and the local authorities assessed that the plant suffered 200 million Yuan worth damages from the fire. As the investigation is going on, the size of damage is snowballing. The recovery is expected to take longer than 6 months.
LG Display is scurrying around its list of other Korean and Taiwanese suppliers to find out their production capacities and re-allocate orders. However, since Heesung had produced a lion’s share of BLUs, the market is expected to be hectic for the time being, since the other local suppliers cannot increase their production capacities in a flash.
Apple is also under a tremendous pressure - Heesung had been supplying monthly average of 500,000 iPad BLUs and 1.3 million MacBook BLUs per month to Apple through LG Display, and for the other supplier in the area, Radiant Opto Electronics, to make up for the Heesung’s shortage, it will have to double its production volume just for Apple parts.

희성전자의 중국 난징 공장 화재로 LG디스플레이(LGD)의 백라이트유닛(BLU) 수급에 비상이 걸렸다. 희성전자는 아이패드용 BLU를 생산해 온 업체여서, 애플의 발등에도 불이 떨어졌다.
14일 중국 현지 소식통에 따르면, 애플은 희성전자 난징 공장 피해 규모를 정확히 파악하기 위해 조사단을 꾸리는 한편 물량을 대체할 업체를 찾고 있다.
지난 10일 희성전자 2공장 1층 도광판 압출•사출 라인에 화재가 발생했으며, 2층 LED 조립라인까지 불이 옮겨 붙었다. 화재 피해액은 2억위안(약 340억원) 정도로 추산됐는데, 조사가 진행됨에 따라 피해액은 눈덩이처럼 불어나고 있다. 건물 붕괴 위험도 우려돼 복구까지 6개월 이상 걸릴 것으로 예상된다.
LGD는 국내와 대만 협력업체 생산능력을 파악하고 급히 물량 배분 작업에 나섰다. 다행히 도광판의 형태를 만드는 금형 라인에는 화재가 발생하지 않아, 해당 금형을 다른 협력업체로 옮겨 생산을 이어가기로 했다.
그러나 희성전자 생산량이 워낙 커 당분간 혼란은 불가피할 전망이다. 현지의 다른 협력사들이 생산 능력을 갑자기 늘리기는 어렵기 때문이다. 특히 아이패드용 제품이 가장 큰 문제다. 희성전자는 애플 2차 협력사로 LG디스플레이를 통해 아이패드용 BLU 월 50만대, 맥북 시리즈 월 130만대 가량을 공급하고 있다. 이 중 희성전자가 단독으로 공급하는 모델 물량만 월 50만대 수준인 것으로 알려졌다. 또 다른 현지 협력사인 대만 라디언트옵토일렉트로닉스(ROE) 난징 공장이 대체하려면 아이패드용 생산량을 배로 늘려야 하는 상황이다.
LGD는 중국 난징 공장에서 전체 모듈 물량의 35% 정도인 월 610만대를 만든다. 셀은 한국에서 들여오고 희성전자와 대만 ROE 등의 난징 현지 공장에서 BLU를 수급받아 모듈을 만드는 형태다. 이 중 희성전자는 난징에서 월 200만대 가량을 LGD에 공급해 왔다.
이에 따라 애플이 삼성디스플레이와 다시 손을 잡을 수 있다는 전망도 나오고 있다. 희성전자의 BLU 공급에 차질이 생기면서 LG디스플레이 P98•P5•P6 라인의 패널 생산량이 하향조정될 가능성도 있기 때문이다.
업계 관계자는 “이번 사고를 계기로 애플과 삼성디스플레이간 아이패드용 제품 거래 재개에 탄련 이 붙고 있다”며 “애플 측 요청으로 지난 11일 삼성디스플레이는 미국에서 미팅을 진행한 것으로 안다”고 말했다.
