SEOUL, KOREA - Chung Mong-koo, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, will depart for the United States on May 6 as part of a delegation to accompany President Park Geun-hye for her first summit meeting with the U.S. President Barack Obama.
During the U.S. trip, Chung will pay a visit to the Hyundai plant in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Kia plant in West Point, near Atlanta, Georgia. He may remark on the issue of capacity expansion plans in these plants. Recently the domestic plants have had problem with keeping up with orders for up to nine weeks (a total of 63,000 cars) as the union refused to honor the company's request to lengthen weekend work hours.
The two plants in the U.S. south are considered the most likely candidates for capacity expansion. Earlier on May 2, Chung said in a leadership meeting for the Federation of Korean Industries, "We can build more production lines overseas if we are given an opportunity."
