SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics announced on May 12 that it has developed a core technology that can send and receive data at a 5G environment for the first time in the world. 5G is a next-generation telecommunication network that has a maximum speed of tens of Gbps, hundreds times faster than today's 4G LTE that has a maximum speed of 75 Mbps.
The LTE-Advanced that SK Telecom is aiming to commercialize from September 2013 has a maximum speed of 150 Mbps. If using 5G telecommunication, an ultra-high-quality movie file can be downloaded within a second. LTE takes 1 minute and 24 seconds to download an 800-MB movie, while LTE-Advanced 43 seconds.
Samsung Electronics recently succeeded in developing and demonstrating the technology that realizes a transmission speed and distance of up to more than 1 Gbps and 2 km at a 28-GHz high-frequency band. Samsung Electronics plans to step up its R&D efforts to commercialize core 5G telecommunication technologies by 2020.
