SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung has set up a U.S. subsidiary with specialty in patent issues. This is part of Samsung's strategy to cope with the threat of "patent trolls," companies that enforce their patents against alleged infringers in a manner considered unduly aggressive.
Samsung Display announced on May 23 that it has established Intellectual Keystone Technology (IKT) in Washington, D.C. by investing US$25 million.

KT will engage in exploration and purchase of patents. Samsung Display is owned by Samsung Electronics (84.8%) and Samsung SDI (15.2%).
A Samsung Display official said, "Amid growing importance of patent management, we decided to set up a company to take charge of responsibilities for exploring patents needed for the whole Samsung Group. As it is now in its infant stage, details on its specific role and future direction would be determined as it is moving along."
