SEOUL, KOREA – The South Korean government will this year invest KRW 180 billion in the development of intelligent robots and robot promotion projects aimed for new market creation.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) held the first Robot Industry Policy Council meeting in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do Province, and decided to invest in the development of intelligent robots and robot promotion projects.
The Korean government plans to invest KRW 108.5 billion in developing fundamental technologies and convergence-based products, KRW 19.5 billion in efforts to expand the robot market, KRW 35.2 billion in building up industrial infrastructures, KRW 19 billion in robot promotion projects aimed to create new markets, and KRW 120 million in setting up a nationwide cooperation structure this year.
A variety of inter-ministerial pilot projects will be conducted to expand robot projects that can create new markets – for example, robots that automatically detect fine cracks in egg shells, rescue robots that can be used to save drowning people, firefighting robots and autonomous flying robots.

범 부처 협업으로 로봇산업 진흥…올해 1800억 투입
정부가 올해 1800억원을 투입해 지능형 로봇 개발과 시장 창출형 로봇 보급 사업을 펼친다.
산업통상자원부는 30일 과천정부청사에서 관계 부처 합동으로 `2013년도 제1차 로봇산업정책협의회(위원장 김재홍 산업부 제1차관)`를 열고 올해 지능형 로봇과 시장 창출형 로봇 보급사업 계획을 확정했다
올해 정부는 △원천기술, 융합제품 개발 촉진 1085억원 △로봇 시장 확대 지원 195억원 △산업 인프라 확충 352억원 △시장 창출형 로봇 사업 190억원 △범 국가적 협력체제 구축 1억2000만원 등 1825억원가량을 로봇 사업에 투입할 계획이다.
시장 창출형 로봇 사업을 확대하고자 부처 공동으로 다양한 시범 사업을 실시한다. 계란 껍질에 생긴 실금 유무를 자동 판별하는 `파각란 판별로봇`, 해상 익수자를 구조하는 `수상구조로봇`, 화재•조난 시 공중에서 상황을 확인하는 `자율비행로봇` 사업 등을 추진한다.
정부는 부처 간 칸막이 없는 협력을 위해 관계 부처와 연구개발(R&D) 지원기관 등으로 로봇 R&D 협의채널을 구성하기로 했다. 각 부처가 역할을 분담해 기초 R&D→산업원천 R&D→상용화 R&D→현장 적용•활용으로 이어지는 전 과정을 지원한다.
정부는 연말 마무리되는 `제1차 지능형 로봇 기본계획(2009~2013년)`을 이어갈 2차 계획(2014~2018년) 수립 작업도 시작한다. 다음달 로봇 전문가와 수요기관 등으로 구성된 `제2차 기본계획 기획위원회`를 발족한다.
2차 계획 기본 방향은 공통 기반기술 및 핵심부품 개발, 신 서비스 비즈니스 모델 발굴, 중소기업 육성, 일자리 창출 등이다.
김재홍 산업부 차관은 “로봇 산업은 제조업뿐만 아니라 국방•의료•교육•농업 등 다른 산업과 접목 가능한 대표적 융합 산업”이라며 “부처 간 협업에 바탕을 둔 로봇 산업이 융합형 비즈니스 모델을 만들고 일자리를 창출할 수 있는 정책을 수립하겠다”고 말했다.
