SEOUL, KOREA – Celebrating the 26th anniversary of the June Democracy Movement on Monday, South Korea President Park Geun-hye said that the Korean government will press ahead with its economic democratization policy without delay. “I believe that Korea’s democracy should mature even further and democratic values should be expanded to a greater extent,” President Park said.
President Park continued, “The Korean government will do its best to usher South Korea into a new era in which people will not be discriminated against for where they come from and for their academic backgrounds. It is important to widen the realm of democratic values to the economic sector. By pursuing the economic democratization policy, the government will create an environment where hard work pays off and your strenuous efforts guarantee a livable, decent life.”
“Furthermore, North Koreans also have to enjoy freedom and prosperity. By taking steps toward the unification of the two Koreas, the South Korean government will take pains to make a happier Korean peninsula.”

박 대통령 "경제민주화 흔들림없이 추진"
박근혜 대통령은 제26주년 6•10 민주항쟁 기념일인 10일 “경제민주화 정책을 흔들림 없이 추진하겠다”고 말했다. 이날 오전 서울시청에서 열린 기념식에서 유정복 안전행정부 장관이 대독한 기념사에서 “이제는 보다 성숙한 민주주의를 구현하고 그 가치를 더욱 확장해 가야 한다고 생각한다”며 이같이 밝혔다.
박 대통령은 “새 정부는 지역 때문에 차별받지 않고, 학벌 때문에 소외받지 않는 새 시대를 만들기 위해 최선을 다할 것”이라고 약속했다. 박 대통령은 “민주화의 영역을 경제 분야까지도 확장해 가는 것도 중요한 과제”라며 “정부는 경제민주화 정책을 흔들림없이 추진해 노력한만큼 보상을 받고, 땀흘린 만큼 안정된 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 만들어가겠다”고 밝혔다. 아울러 “북녘의 동포들도 자유와 번영을 함께 누려야 한다”며 “한걸음 한걸음 평화 통일의 기반을 구축해 한반도 행복시대를 열어가는데 최선을 다하겠다”고 언급했다.
또 “한반도를 넘어 자유와 인권이라는 인류 보편의 가치를 확산하고 테러와 빈곤, 핵 안전 등 글로벌 이슈 해결에 적극 동참해 지구촌 평화와 행복을 만들어가는 일에도 앞장서겠다”고 덧붙였다.
박 대통령은 6•10 민주항쟁에 대해 “1987년 6월은 우리 현대사의 물줄기를 바꾼 분수령이었다. 민주주의를 향한 국민의 뜨거운 열망은 위대한 역사의 전진을 이뤄냈다”며 “그 날, 거리를 가득 메웠던 순수한 열정과 정신이야말로 소중하고 값진 민주주의의 자산”이라고 평가했다. 그러면서 “정부는 6월 항쟁의 고귀한 정신과 가치를 이어받아 민주주의를 더욱 발전시키고, 국민 모두가 행복한 희망의 새 시대를 열겠다”고 말했다.
