SEOUL, KOREA - ICT will be embedded with the energy sector to create a comprehensive solution to save electric power and improve the efficiency of energy use.

The minister of Trade, Industry and Energy visited ‘Eco Lab’, a research institute of SK Chemical, on June 11 to check the Energy Management System (EMS) and to discuss how to save electricity by utilizing ICT.

EMS is a system that consists of energy management software and communication, data collection and monitoring, facility-controlling technology and others in order to monitor and control the status of energy use on a real-time basis.

The research institute of SK Chemical is equipped with more than 40 high efficiency energy technologies including a Building Energy Management System (BEMS), LED lights, a photovoltaic system and others to optimize the use of energy. The institute is saving 40% of energy compared with similar facilities in size.

The results of the EMS pilot project the Ministry has implemented for the past two years show that up to 9% of average annual energy could be reduced. The Ministry is planning to diffuse relevant technologies for the systemization of energy saving and the intelligent management of power supply and demand in real time. It will also provide financial and tax incentives for big companies and SMEs so as to help them introduce EMS. It might force public institutes and large-sized energy-consuming facilities to install EMS if necessary.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is going to release a plan for energy reduction based on ICT around the end of the month.
