Seoul, Korea - KT announced on the 12th that it will provide LTE and 3G services on the passenger boats that connect Pohang, Ulrungdo and Dokdo (about 300 kilometers from the East coast), as a part of LTE quality inspection project started in last March subjecting 100 major mountains and islands.
KT is going to provide a variety of services by setting-up the LTE network in the marine area far away from the land. The LTE service in the sea is expected to help prevent accidents and make timely response to emergencies.
A KT person emphasized, “not only the coastline areas, but also Dokdo and Ulrungdo, the islands visited by some 400,000 people every year will be placed inside KT’s LTE coverage, and the users will be able to enjoy the top-quality service.”
Daesan Lee, Vice President of KT Daegu Network Operation, commented, “KT will build the LTE coverage along the East coast before any other telecom companies. In the remote areas off the power grid, KT will use all available means, including solar generation.”

KT는 포항~울릉도~독도 여객선 해상로에 3G와 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 서비스를 제공한다고 12일 밝혔다.
동해안 해상품질 확보는 지난 3월부터 시작된 100대 주요 명산, 섬 지역 LTE 품질점검 프로젝트의 일환이다.
육지에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 해상로에 LTE 네트워크를 구축해 다양한 서비스를 제공한다. 여객선 안전사고 예방과 긴급상황 발생 시 신속한 대응조치가 가능할 전망이다.
KT 관계자는 “해안 인근 커버리지는 물론이고 울릉도를 거쳐 연간 40만명의 여행객이 방문하는 독도까지(약 300㎞) 최상의 LTE 서비스 품질을 제공할 수 있게 됐다”고 강조했다.
이대산 KT 대구네트워크운용단상무는 “KT는 동해연안 LTE 커버리지를 타사보다 앞장서서 구축해 나갈 예정”이라며 “상용전력 확보가 어려운 도서 지역에는 태양광 등을 이용해 LTE 서비스를 제공할 것”이라고 말했다.
