SEOUL, KOREA – Irving A. Williamson, Chairman of the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) will pay a visit to South Korea next week. Since the US ICT has recently ruled in favor of Samsung Electronics in the Apple-Samsung patent dispute, his visit to Korea draws attention. Besides, Many are curious about Irving A. Williamson’s views on US anti-dumping measures on Korean steel products and home appliances.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), Chairman Irving A. Williamson will visit South Korea to attend the Seoul International Forum on Trade Remedies, scheduled for June 18.
Irving A. Williamson will attend Welcome Dinner Event in Seoul on June 17 and will make a presentation on “Outlook on International Trade Remedies in FTA Era” at the Seoul International Forum on Trade Remedies in the following day. On June 19, he will pay a visit to major industrial facilities including POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks.
Irving A. Williamson was promoted to Chairman of the US ICT in June of last year.

美 ITC 위원장 내주 방한…발언 수위 주목
최근 애플의 삼성 특허 침해를 인정해 주목받은 미국 국제무역위원회(ITC) 어빙 윌리엄슨 위원장이 다음 주 방한한다. 한국산 철강과 가전제품 덤핑 현안도 걸려 있어 윌리엄슨 위원장의 발언에 관심이 모였다.
13일 산업통상자원부 무역위원회와 업계에 따르면 윌리엄슨 위원장은 18일 열리는 `2013 무역구제 서울국제포럼` 참석차 한국을 찾는다.
윌리엄슨 위원장은 17일 저녁 환영만찬에 참석한 후 다음날 포럼에서 `FTA 시대 무역구제제도 발전 전망`에 관해 발표한다. 19일에는 포스코 광양제철소 등 국내 산업시설을 시찰할 예정이다.
윌리엄슨 위원장은 세계무역기구(WTO), 미 무역대표부(USTR) 등에서 근무한 뒤 ITC 부위원장을 거쳐 지난해 6월 임기 2년 위원장에 지명됐다.
ITC는 덤핑, 특허침해 등 불공정 무역행위를 조사하는 기관이다. 지난 4일엔 애플이 삼성전자 스마트폰 특허를 침해했다고 최종 판정했다. 한국산 철강이나 가전제품에 대한 반덤핑 조치 등으로도 유명하다.
업무 특성상 윌리엄슨 위원장이 삼성-애플 특허소송 등 구체적인 현안에 관한 의견을 밝힐 가능성은 낮다.
하지만 지난해 위원장 취임 후 첫 방한인 만큼 이해당사자인 한국 기업이 다양하게 접촉을 시도할 것으로 보인다. 실제로 18일 포럼 직후 해외 초청인사들이 참석한 가운데 열리는 비즈니스다이얼로그에 국내 대기업 몇 곳이 참석을 신청한 상태다.
