SEOUL, KOREA - SK Engineering & Construction Inc. said on June 18 that it won a US$1.2-billion project to build coal-fired thermal power plants in Chile. The project calls for building two 375-megawatt power plants in Mejillones, Antofagasta Province, about 1,200 kilometers north of the capital Santiago. The project was commissioned by E-CL S.A., a Chilean private energy company.
SK E&C will be responsible for the whole process of construction from design to purchasing, construction, and pilot operation. It will begin the construction work by the first half of next year and finish within 40 months. Most of the electric power generated in the plants will be supplied to large-scale mines located nearby.
SK E&C has worked hard to enter the Chilean construction market since 2009. Even though the company participated in a bidding in 2011, it was unable to win the order. The latest win is the first achievement after four years of preparation and challenge.
