SEOUL, KOREA - Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said on June 20 that it has successfully installed the world's first liquefied natural gas fuel supply system (LNG-FGSS) on container carriers. Earlier in December last year, the company had signed a contract to supply a design and materials package to Nasco Shipping of the United States and has recently completed the installation. The FGSS has been mounted on five 3,100-TEU container ships that will be delivered to Totem Ocean Trailer Express by Nasco Shipping.
DSME said the latest feat is meaningful in that it has opened up an age of LNG-fueled merchant fleet. Up until now most merchant ships such as container carriers and bulk carriers have used heavy oil. LNG-fired vessels consume 20 to 30 percent less fuel, with much lower emissions in nitrogenous compounds or sulfur oxides.
The company expects that more and more ship owners will prefer LNG-propelled ships if more ports across the world build LNG fuel stations. Chung Bang-yeon, senior vice president responsible for technical matters, said, "Once LNG-fueled vessels are commercialized, DSME will be able to lead the area as we are the pioneer in the LNG fuel supply system."
