SEOUL, KOREA – The South Korean government is known to have been mulling a package sale of Woori Bank, Woori Investment and Securities and Woori Credit Card.
"We are pondering ways to privatize Woori Bank and the group's affiliates including the credit card unit in a package sale in order to raise the selling price. Since there are many prospective bidders for Woori Investment and Securities, we are considering tacking Woori Aviva Life Insurance onto the sale of Woori Investment and Securities," said officials from the Financial Services Commission (FSC).
KB Financial Group Inc. is viewed as the strongest contender who is capable of taking over Woori Bank and Woori Credit Card at the same time. If KB Financial Group takes the ownership of the two, it will become the largest bank in South Korea.

우리금융지주 민영화 방안이 오는 26일 발표를 앞둔 가운데 우리은행과 우리투자증권, 우리카드를 일괄 매각하는 방안을 추진할 것으로 알려졌다.
금융위원회 관계자는 “우리은행만 팔 경우 제값을 받기 어려워 시너지가 나는 계열사들을 일괄 매각하는 방안을 보고 있다”고 설명했다. 우리투자증권은 인수 희망자가 많아 우리아비바생명과 묶어 파는 방안을 고려 중이다.
우리은행과 우리카드 등을 일괄 인수할 수 있는 후보로는 KB금융지주가 꼽히고 있다.
KB금융지주가 우리은행을 인수해 합병하면 국내 최대 은행으로 등극한다.
임영록 KB금융 회장 내정자가 `리딩뱅크` 목표를 제시한 것도 우리은행 인수전을 염두에 둔 포석이라는 의견이 지배적이다. KB국민은행과 우리은행의 조합은 총자산 700조원에 육박해 합병될 경우 국내 최대 규모의 메가 뱅크가 된다.
