SEOUL, KOREA – POSCO ICT, a subsidiary of South Korea's steel maker POSCO, said Thursday that it signed an MoU with Japanese secondary battery company Edison Power to build ESS (energy storage system)-based micro grids. Along with the MoU, the 1㎿ ESS jointly developed by POSCO ICT and South Korean PCS company S&D Powernics will be supplied to Edison Power.
The 1㎿ ESS will be used in building micro grids that generate electricity in conjunction with 2㎿ solar power facilities located in Edison Power’s research complex, which is currently under construction in Kitamori in Chiba.
Building on their experience with micro grid construction in the complex, POSCO ICT and Edison Power plan to take on the Japanese market. POSCO ICT will supply large-volume ESSs while Edison Power will take care of local marketing and sales activities.
POSCO ICT CEO Cho Bong-rae said, “The Japanese smart grid and independent power generation system market has ballooned in the aftermath of Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster. In collaboration with Edison Power, POSCO ICT will concentrate on ESS supplies and micro grid construction projects in Japan.”

포스코ICT가 일본 대형 ESS 시장에 진출한다.
포스코ICT(대표 조봉래)는 27일 성남 판교 본사에서 일본 이차전지 전문기업 에디슨파워와 에너지저장시스템(ESS) 기반 마이크로그리드(독립형전력망) 구축 사업 양해각서(MOU)를 교환했다고 밝혔다. 이와 함께 포스코ICT와 국내 PCS업체인 S＆D파워닉스와 공동으로 개발한 1㎿급 ESS를 공급키로 했다.
포스코ICT의 ESS는 지바현 키타모리에 건설 중인 에디슨파워의 연구단지 내 2㎿ 규모 태양광발전원과 연동해 전력을 생산하는 마이크로그리드 구축에 활용된다. 이 단지에서 생산된 2㎿급 전력은 도쿄전력에 판매할 계획이다. 2㎿는 1000가구가 한 달 동안 사용할 수 있는 전력량이다. ESS는 태양광에서 생산된 전력을 저장한 뒤 출력이 불안정한 태양광발전원을 기존 전력계통에 안정적으로 공급하는 데 주로 사용할 예정이다.
특히 양사는 단지의 마이크로그리드 구축 경험을 바탕으로 일본 시장 공략에 적극 나설 방침이다. 포스코ICT는 대용량의 ESS를 공급하고 에디슨파워는 일본 내 현지 영업과 마케팅을 담당한다.
조봉래 포스코ICT 사장은 “일본은 원전사고 이후 스마트그리드와 독립형 전력생산체계 시장이 급격하게 성장하고 있다”며 “에디슨파워와 협력해 일본 내 ESS공급과 마이크로그리드 구축 사업에 적극 나설 것”이라고 말했다.
