SEOUL, KOREA – At the GSMA Mobile Asia Expo 2013, held in Shanghai, South Korea telecom operator KT said on Thursday that it has commercialized a SIM-based Wi-Fi roaming service in China and South Korea.
Thanks to the SIM-based Wi-Fi roaming technology, KT subscribers can automatically use data roaming services in China via KT’s Wi-Fi networks.
When KT subscribers visit China, their smartphones are automatically connected to China Mobile’s Wi-Fi networks, so the hassle of entering ID or passwords and getting certified will be unnecessary.
This is true of China Mobile’s subscribers. When China Mobile’s subscribers come to South Korea, their smartphones will automatically access KT’s Olleh Wi-Fi networks.
Following the launch of its automatic SIM-based Wi-Fi roaming service in China, KT is scheduled to carry out pilot services in partnerships with Japan’s NTT Docomo, Hutchison Telecom (in Hong Kong), Indonesia’s Indosat, the Philippines’ SMART, Thailand’s Truemove, Singapore’s Starhub, Taiwan’s Fareastone, etc.

KT, 해외 자동 와이파이 로밍 서비스 세계 최초 상용화
중국에서 3G나 LTE 로밍처럼 와이파이도 편리한 로밍서비스를 이용할 수 있게 됐다.
KT는 중국 상하이에서 열리고 있는 GSMA 모바일 아시아 엑스포(Mobile Asia Expo)에서 가입자 심(SIM) 카드 기반 와이파이 로밍 기술을 적용한다고 27일 밝혔다.
이를 통해 중국에서도 별도의 인증 과정 없이 자동적으로 KT 와이파이에 접속해 데이터 로밍을 이용할 수 있게 됐다.
KT 가입자가 중국을 방문할 경우 자동으로 차이나 모바일의 와이파이를 선택하고 별도의 아이디와 패스워드 입력 없이 바로 와이파이 로밍을 이용할 수 있다.
중국 차이나 모바일 고객이 한국을 방문할 경우에는 KT의 올레 와이파이에 자동으로 접속해 3G나 LTE 이동통신과 동일하게 서비스를 즐길 수 있다.
심(SIM) 카드 기반 와이파이 로밍 기술은 국내에서 KT 올레와이파이 접속 시 무선접속점(AP)만 선택하면 아이디와 패스워드 없이 올레와이파이에 접속하는 방식으로 MAE 전시장에서도 동일한 방식으로 와이파이를 사용할 수 있다.
KT는 중국에 이어 아시아 최대 이동통신 사업자 연합체 커넥서스(CONEXUS) 회원사인 NTT 도코모(일본), 허치슨텔레콤(홍콩), Indosat(인도네시아), SMART(필리핀), truemove(태국), Starhub(싱가폴), fareastone(대만) 등과 파트너십을 맺고 시범서비스를 시작할 예정이다.
이동면 KT 인프라연구소장(전무)은 “그동안 축적한 KT의 우수한 와이파이 기술과 글로벌 통신사와 협력을 바탕으로 해외 자동 와이파이 로밍 서비스를 세계 최초로 상용화했다”며 “KT 고객은 중국 등 해외에서도 국내에서와 같이 차별화된 와이파이 로밍서비스를 제공 받을 수 있다”고 강조했다.
