Seoul, Korea - Samsung Electronics is to take steps to quit the LED joint venture with Sumitomo by selling all the shares of Samsung Sumitomo LED Materials (SSLM) to Sumitomo. Accordingly, some changes are expected in Samsung’s strategy to outpace global leader Nichia through the joint venture for LED core materials, which the company considers as a promising new business sector
Samsung currently holds a half of the joint venture shares, amounting to KRW 52.296 billion, and will wrap up all the break-up process within this month unless any unexpected events arise.
SSLM was established by 50/50 investment between Samsung LED (current LED department of Samsung Electronics) and Sumitomo in 2011, and specializes in sapphire ingot and wafer, supplying high purity alumina. Many expected the joint venture between Samsung and the leading supplier of high purity alumina to rapidly dominate the LED market.
With the establishment of SSLM, Samsung succeeded in vertically integrating its LED lighting sector, ranging from LED core materials, circuit boards, chips, packages, modules to complete products.
Samsung, however, decided to withdraw from the ingot and wafer market as SSLM had suffered deficits continuously since its establishment in 2011.
Nonetheless, Sumitomo will keep its manufacturing facility in Korea, but it is uncertain whether the company will make further investments as it had initially planned.
“Nothing has been confirmed yet, and we have been considering various measures to enhance competitiveness” said a Samsung staff.

삼성과 일본 스미토모가 발광다이오드(LED) 사업에서 결별 수순을 밟는다. 삼성그룹이 신수종사업 중 하나로 꼽는 LED 핵심 소재 협력을 통해 세계 1위 닛치아를 넘겠다는 전략에도 일부 수정이 예상된다.
30일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자는 일본 스미토모화학과 합작한 SSLM(삼성스미토모머티리얼즈•대표 강영철) 지분을 스미토모화학에 전량 매각하기로 했다.
양사 간 이견이 없는 만큼 이달 지분 정리 방법에 관한 협의가 마무리될 것으로 예상된다. 삼성전자 지분은 전체의 절반인 522억9600만원이다.
SSLM은 지난 2011년 삼성LED(현 삼성전자 LED사업부)와 스미토모화학이 50 대 50으로 출자해 설립한 LED용 사파이어 잉곳•웨이퍼 전문회사다.
스미토모화학은 사파이어 잉곳의 핵심 소재인 고순도 알루미나를 공급하는 업체다. 합작사 출범 당시 대규모 양산 투자로 반도체•디스플레이 시장을 석권한 삼성전자와 고순도 알루미나 점유율 1위 업체가 협력해 단숨에 LED 시장을 제패할 것으로 기대됐다.
삼성전자는 SSLM 설립으로 LED 핵심 소재에서 기판, 칩, 패키지, 모듈, 완제품에 이르는 LED 조명 분야를 완전히 수직 계열화하는 데도 성공했다.
합작사는 대구 지역 대기업 1호라는 상징성도 있다. 지난 2011년 7월 기공식에 박근혜 대통령, 최지성 삼성 미래전략실장, 권오현 삼성전자 부회장(직함은 현직 기준) 등이 참석해 주목받았다.
삼성이 사파이어 잉곳•웨이퍼 시장에서 철수하는 이유는 수익성을 담보할 수 없다고 판단했기 때문이다. SSLM은 2011년 말 공장 가동 이후 적자를 이어왔다. 지난 1분기에는 333억4100만원 순손실을 기록했다.
삼성전자가 손을 떼지만 스미토모화학은 한국 내 제조시설을 그대로 유지할 전망이다. 다만 설립 시 계획했던 투자를 모두 집행할지는 미지수다.
당초 양사는 2015년까지 5000억원을 투자하기로 했지만 수정이 불가피하다. SSLM은 2011년 1804억원을 투자한 뒤 지난해 투자액을 430억원으로 대폭 줄였다.
삼성전자 관계자는 “아직 확정된 바는 없다”면서도 “경쟁력 제고를 위해 여러 가지 방안을 검토하고 있다”고 조심스러운 입장을 내비쳤다.
