SEOUL, KOREA - According to KT and LG U+ on the 14th, the two telecom companies are also starting their LTE-A service from this week. LG U+ is to start the service from early in the week, and KT is expected to announce its commercial service plan soon.
As all the three telecom companies are expected to provide LTE-A services by the end of next week, the telecom market will face yet another competition to win the consumers' hearts - SK Telecom to defend its leadership in the LTE-A market, and KT and LG U+ to take that leadership away to themselves.
LG is to announce its start of commercial service of LTE-A early in this week and start the service immediately. The LTE-A service of LG U+ is to adopt 'Single LTE', commercialized for the first time in the world, allowing the voice communication to be made through the LTE network.
KT is known to be inches away from commercialization of its LTE-A service. The industry is expecting the company will start commercial service within this week, if early.
A KT person commented that KT had been ready with the LTE-A handset, which became available in the market last week. However, ""there are some troubles to fix, such as frequency interference, but it will be solved soon, and the company will start the commercial service soon,"" he added. Some in the trade anticipated that KT will not be able to fix the service go-alive date yet, because the frequency clearing issue is not finalized.
KT had been preparing for the commercial LTE-A service by starting the sales of Galaxy S4 LTE-A terminals from the 12th last week. LG Electronics is to launch its new model, Optimus G2 soon, including a version that supports the LTE-A.

SK텔레콤에 이어 KT와 LG유플러스가 이번 주부터 롱텀에벌루션 어드밴스트(LTE-A) 경쟁에 가세한다. 통신 3사가 나란히 LTE보다 전송속도가 두 배 빠른 LTE-A 시장에 포문을 열면서 LTE 전쟁의 제2막이 시작된다.
누가 더 좋은 품질과 차별화된 서비스를 제공할지에 따라 이동통신 시장 판도가 바뀔 것으로 예상된다. 통신 속도가 빨라지면서 풀HD 동영상 스트리밍, 다자간 영상통화 등 새로운 서비스와 풀HD 스마트폰 등 콘텐츠·단말 시장에서도 연쇄적인 혁신 시도가 잇따를 전망이다.
14일 KT와 LG유플러스에 따르면 양사는 이번 주 LTE-A 상용화에 돌입한다. LG유플러스는 주 초반에, KT도 조만간 상용화 계획을 발표할 것으로 예상된다.
통신 3사가 LTE-A를 상용화하면 통신시장 경쟁이 격화될 것으로 보인다. SK텔레콤은 한발 먼저 LTE-A를 상용화한 주도권을 지키기 위해, KT와 LG유플러스는 주도권을 빼앗기 위해 마케팅 역량을 강화할 것으로 전망된다.
LG유플러스는 이번주 초 LTE-A 상용화를 선언하고 곧바로 서비스를 시작한다. 특히 LG유플러스는 음성까지 LTE로 통화하는 `싱글 LTE` 세계 첫 상용화에 나선다.
LG유플러스 관계자는 “서울, 수도권과 광역시 주요 트래픽 밀집지역까지 LTE-A 서비스를 제공할 준비가 완료됐다”면서 “주 초반 상용화에 들어갈 계획”이라고 말했다. 이 관계자는 “LTE 커버리지를 충분히 갖췄고, 기지국을 변환할 때 음성이 끊어지는 문제도 해결해 싱글 LTE 상용화에 문제가 없다”고 설명했다.
KT도 LTE-A 상용화를 목전에 둔 것으로 알려졌다. 이르면 이번 주 상용화에 나설 것이라는 관측이 나온다.
KT 한 관계자는 “단말기 준비는 완료돼 지난주 판매를 시작했다”면서 “네트워크 측면에서는 주파수 간섭 등 약간의 문제가 남아 있지만 조만간 상용화할 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
KT는 LTE-A를 위한 보조 주파수 대역인 900㎒에서 전파간섭 문제가 있어 상용화를 미뤄 왔지만 대부분 문제를 해소하면서 상용화에 근접한 것으로 보인다. 다만 주파수 클리어링 문제가 완전히 해결된 것이 아니어서 상용화 시기를 정하기 어렵다는 의견도 있다.
오성목 KT 네트워크부문장은 “900㎒ 주파수 간섭 문제 해결을 위해 노력해왔고 많이 진행됐다”면서도 “아직 완전하지 않고, 미래부에서 주파수 클리어링 조치를 결정해줘야 상용화를 시작할 수 있다”고 밝혔다.
KT는 지난 12일부터 삼성전자 갤럭시S4 LTE-A 단말기 판매를 시작하며 상용화에 대비해왔다. 삼성전자에 이어 LG전자도 스마트폰 신작 `옵티머스 G2`를 LTE-A 지원 모델로 출시할 계획이다.
