SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics is going to outsource the production of smartphone, which is the first attempt for premium smartphone. Samsung is expecting to enhance price competitiveness amid the expansion of the mid-and-low end smartphone markets. The company will be able to respond to the market rapidly and save budget. Samsung Electronics plans to expand the outsourcing for smartphone further in the future, as it did for feature phones. Samsung Electronics announced that it will outsource its budget smartphone ‘Galaxy S4 mini’ to BYD, a Chinese company. “We witnessed increase in the sales and profit of mobile phone parts and assembly businesses and established partnerships with Samsung Electronics, Huawei, Nokia, HTC and Dell and will focus more on smartphone business in the future,” said the chairman of BYD. According to the Global Times, a Chinese English newspaper, BYD is going to expand its smartphone OEM business. Samsung Electronics has already established close relations with BYD through the outsourcing of feature phone production. Currently, BYD produces global smartphone companies' core models, including Galaxy S4 mini, HTCs ONE, Huawei Ascend P6, Nokia Lumia 1020, as well as Apple’s iPhone. “The outsourcing is aimed to increase production without investment in the production line expansion, which seems effective for enhancing production competitiveness, but the bottom line is how to maintain product quality”, said a person from the industry.
삼성, 스마트폰도 외주 생산…중국 BYD `갤S4 미니` OEM 생산
삼성전자가 스마트폰도 외주 생산에 나선다. 피처폰이 아닌 프리미엄 스마트폰 부문에서는 첫 시도다. 스마트폰 시장이 중저가 부문으로 확대되고, 제품 라인업이 늘어나면서 가격 경쟁력을 높이기 위한 전략으로 풀이된다. 피처폰 시절 외주 생산을 확대했던 것처럼 향후 스마트폰 역시 중저가 제품을 중심으로 외주 생산이 더 확대될 것으로 전망된다.
16일 삼성전자와 중국 비야디(BYD)에 따르면 삼성전자는 최근 BYD에 보급형 스마트폰 `갤럭시S4 미니` 생산을 맡겼다. 삼성전자가 스마트폰을 외주 생산하는 것이 확인된 것은 이번이 처음이다.
왕찬푸 BYD 회장은 이날 1분기 실적발표 자리에서 “스마트패드를 포함한 신규 사업을 확대해 휴대폰 부품과 조립 사업의 매출 및 순익을 늘렸다”면서 “삼성전자, 화웨이, 노키아, HTC, 델 등과 파트너십을 맺고 있고 향후 스마트폰 사업에 집중하겠다”고 밝혔다.
중국 국영매체 글로벌타임스도 BYD가 갤럭시S4 미니를 포함한 스마트폰 주문자상표부착생산(OEM) 사업을 확대한다고 보도했다. 갤럭시S4 미니는 삼성전자의 최신 전략 스마트폰 갤럭시S4의 보급형 모델이다. 국내에도 자급제 단말기로 출시할 예정이다.
삼성전자와 BYD는 이미 피처폰 외주 생산도 협력하면서 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 현재 BYD가 생산해 공급하는 스마트폰은 갤럭시S4 미니뿐 아니라 최근 발표된 HTC의 원(One), 화웨이의 어센드P6, 노키아의 루미아1020 등 세계 주요 스마트폰업체의 핵심 모델이다. 지난해에는 애플이 BYD가 스마트폰 공급사 중 하나라고 발표하며 아이폰 제조도 하는 것으로 알려졌다.
삼성전자가 그동안 자체 생산만 해왔던 스마트폰에 외주 생산체제를 도입한 것은 중저가 시장 확대에 따른 대응으로 분석된다. 다양한 모델 생산에 빠르게 대처하고 투자비도 절감할 수 있기 때문이다. 과거 피처폰 시대에도 자체 생산으로 시작해 외주 생산으로 확대한 바 있다.
장중혁 애틀러스리서치앤컨설팅 부사장은 “외주 생산을 한다는 것은 공장 라인 투자를 하지 않고도 생산량을 늘리겠다는 의미”라며 “단기간에 물량을 늘릴 수 있는 방안이기도 하다”고 말했다. 장 부사장은 “생산 경쟁력은 높일 수 있지만, 결국 품질 관리를 어떻게 유지할 것인지가 관건”이라고 말했다.
삼성전자 관계자는 이에 대해 “제조와 관련한 부분은 사실 확인을 해줄 수 없다”고 밝혔다.
