SEOUL, KOREA - Professor Ju Dae-jeon is a self-made expert in the field of Korean cyber security, whose achievements in the field is unmatched.

Born in rural Gyeongnam province in Sanheong, Ju lost his parents early, taught himself to receive diplomas, and became a public officer, managing a team of software developers at Korea’s presidential office under vice-secretary of presidential security.

“For thirty-three years of public service, I had a privilege of protecting five presidents,” relates Professor Ju, and indeed it is one of the longest of any public officers. After leaving the public service he started to teach computer science at KAIST, and after only seven months at the institute, was promoted to vice-president of external affairs.

Ju stresses how he made all of his achievements possible. “I have lived under a conviction that even practically impossible things can be realized with the clear goal and iron will and focus. I call it ‘the law of focus,’ and my life is the living proof of it. For me, a person from less than mediocre background, focusing on my goal added with belief and hard work lead to the achievements I made. This law had been my source of energy, my turbo-engine of power and my generator of miracles.”

At KAIST, he is involved with continuing education for top executives called, ‘KAIST S+ Convergence CEO Program’ which started in September 2010. He had upgraded the usual AMPs offered by universities by making it a specialized program in cyber security by connecting the program to the Cyber Security Research Center at KAIST. He also led the establishment of the Cyber Security Research Center in 2011, together with the creation of master’s and doctorate programs in information protection. “The center is now engaged in several projects that will surprise the world with the level of sophistication even the private information protection companies were not able to achieve,” adds Professor Ju with a strong pride in the center’s research.

As a cyber security expert and educator, he says he believes the most important thing he expects his students to remember is to become leaders with vision, dreams and confidence before becoming experts. “I believe that having vision together with physical strength and sense of responsibility is the key for them to become the valuable resources for the country. The vision and dream you have right now will shape their futures, you know”.

He further elaborates on the global trend in cyber security and Korea’s information protection industry by stressing that many countries are betting on the cyber security to become the leader of the future cyber world by educating and training experts at the national level. “Korea must channel its resources to develop the top-notch information protection experts and to vitalize its information protection industry, and the first step is to consider the establishment of a national cyber security office which will act as the control tower of all cyber security related activities at the national level, such as protection of industrial secrets.” Ju emphasizes that this governmental body must be given the authority to supervise the nation’s cyber security efforts in all sectors, including the military, so that the related information can be shared easily and security threats will be dealt at a higher effectiveness.

Ju does not forget to return to his ‘law of focus’ about goals he stills pursues. “I have lived under a conviction that even the practically impossible things can be realized with the clear goal and iron will and focus. I call it ‘the law of focus,’ and my life is the living proof of it.” “For me, a person from less than mediocre background, focusing on my goal added with belief and hard work lead to the achievements I made. The Law had been my source of energy, my turbo-engine of power and my generator of miracles.” His firm determination that he will be the mentor of less privileged students, so that they can also write their own success stories focusing on their goals with the dreams and visions could be felt from his resolved voice.
