SEOUL, KOREA - With the era of the information technology upon us and becoming an increasingly more integral part in our lives it is easy to forget that it was not that long ago that the industry was created. The role of cyber security has become more and more important in our lives. Korea IT Times had an interview with a Professor Chung Tai-myung, at Sungykunkwan University

Chung Tai-Myung, Professor of Sungkyunkwan University

Could you tell us about your research activities in the security area

I have taught and studied security related subjects for decades. In particular, I have focused on network and security management because my background at BBN in the 1980’s was network management system development. When I returned to Korea in 1995, it was at the beginning stage of developing security systems and organizing a security community. Thus, it was a natural step to choose security management as my research topic. Since then, my students and I have developed security systems such as intrusion detection systems, virtual private network, vulnerability analysis systems, and malicious detection system. Currently, our research focuses on the technologies needed to make the cyber environment clean by using quarantine mechanisms, mobile security, and security in the machine to machine environment.

We have heard that you are involved in the process of making security policy. What have been your contributions to this area

I have been a vice chair of Working Party on Information Security and Privacy since 2006. As a representative of the Korean delegation, I participated in the meetings to develop security and privacy related policies for OECD member economies and promote our ICT activities to other nations. This year, I also serve as a chair of the advisory committee for the 2013 Cyber space conference which over 1000 representatives from 94 countries participate. It will be held on October 17thand 18thin Seoul, Korea. The participants will discuss all the security related issues such as internet economy and culture, cyber security, cybercrime, international security, and capacity building.

Domestically, I have served as the president of the Consortium of CERTs (Computer Emergency Response Teams) for 13 years. This group gathers over 400 members who get together and share information to maintain a secure cyber world.

My desire is that I can contribute to the culture of security and privacy of the along with the movement of the public because currently the technology and policies are not sufficient for flawlessly secure world.

What other activities are you involved in

I also served as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on e-government for Korea, and as an expert member of Presidential Advisory Committee on Science & Technology of Korea. My main responsibility was giving advice on building a government integrated computing center. It was the first attempt in the world to gather all computing systems and facilities in one place. For the successful work, I was granted a 2nddegree decoration from Korean government in 2007

One of the activities I really enjoy the most is the SilvernetNews, an internet newspaper published and distributed by retired people. I founded it in 2002 with 13 silver reporters and now over 250 silver reporters enjoy publishing articles in cyberspace. I wish that we could propagate this activity to other countries so that ‘the silvers’ around the world could enjoy ICT in their lives. In fact, Sweden and few other countries have shown interest.

Recently, I spend most of my time directing the software department in Sungkyunkwan University. Outstanding students with full scholarship are admitted and educated by specially designed programs. I have a vision to educate them as the leaders of the computer society and have them contribute to the world as professionals.

Any other achievements you would like to mention

For successful works and services, I have been recognize by receiving awards from the those in the Korean government, including the Prime Minister of Korea, the director of National Intelligence Service, from the Chairman of the Korea Communications commission, the commissioner of National Police Agency, and others.

I have a desire to always participate in the group making the cyber space and future better and safe. I will continue to study better technologies and promote the culture of security by joining in on the policy making process.
