SEOUL, KOREA - With more and more of our information being stored online these days, it has become increasingly clear that security online is a necessity. Korea IT Times sat down with Professor  Ryou Jaecheol of Chungnam University and newly elected president of CONCERT to discuss his role in ever growing world of information security.

Ryou Jaecheol, Professor of Chungnam University

Q) You have been elected as the new president of CONCERT. Can you tell us about CONCERT

A) CONCERT, which stands for Consortium of Computer Emergency Response Team, has been established to prevent the spread of damage caused by incidents on information and communications networks by facilitating the efforts like information sharing, technical exchange, and business cooperation among computer emergency response teams in Korea. Currently, 431 organizations are registered to CONCERT.

Q) What is state of information security for companies in Korea

A) Although there has been an increased interest in information security recently, problems regarding budget and manpower have arisen because office regulations for information security tasks are not clear. It is required to present a standard model which defines appropriate pay and manpower in accordance with a size of company so companies have no choice but to invest in information security even though they might not have any plans since there has not been a strict standard put in place. It puts security teams in a troubling. If a standard model is put forth, the level of information security for companies would be improved and people in the security sector would receive better support and treatment. Since information security is a stressful job that requires a large commitment and a certain level of responsibility, they deserve to be treated in a way that corresponds to their abilities.

Q) Is there anything else you would like to mention

A) In Korea, defense-oriented security techniques have been, for the most part, well developed. However, the situation is similar to the analogy of the spear and shield. The shield is developed in response to the spear and vise versa. In the case of computer security offensive techniques should be developed in order to defend well. For this reason, we need to train and cultivate white hackers. There are many people who have distinctive talents but cannot get mainstream jobs because they haven’t finished certain courses at school. It would be a great assistance to the nation, if we could find and train these specialists for information security.

This is an age of cyber warfare people are becoming more interested in information security than ever before. It is time to aggressively invest in information security and manpower training which are essential to nation security as well as related industries.
