SEOUL, KOREA - Ssangyong Engineering & Construction will be partner to the Malaysian government in a project to develop Langkawi, an archipelago in the Andaman Sea off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.

The government plans to develop the islands as a world-class resort area comparable to Bali or Monaco. The construction contractor said on November 12 that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the St. Regis Hotel Langkawi and Convention Center.

At the ceremony, 350 dignitaries were present including Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Najib, Second Minister of Finance Ahmad Husni, Rajawali Group CEO Peter Sondakh, Korean Ambassador to Malaysia Cho Byung-jae, as well as Ssangyong E&C chairman Kim Seok-jun.

Once the six-star hotel and convention center is completed by March 2015, the Malaysian government will use it as the venue for the 2015 ASEAN Summit+3. The Korean company won the project from Indonesia's Rajawali Group for the foundation-laying process, as well as architectural design and technical support. The company is in talks in the commissioning entity for further contracts in addition to the US$100-million project.
