CAPE TOWN, Dec. 6, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) showed its support for local non-profit cooking school, Infinity Culinary Training, at the LG Home Chef Championship (LG-HCC) 2013 Global Masters Competition in Cape Town, South Africa. LG and this year’s championship finalists spent time with the school’s young students, sharing their knowledge, experiences and passion for food.

“It was a great honor to engage with the local community and watch Infinity Culinary Training’s students express their incredible passion and energy,” said Seong-jin Jo, President and CEO of the LG Home Appliance Company. “Having our international participants and the non-profit school’s students come together to celebrate the love of cooking made this year’s Home Chef Championship all the more memorable and meaningful.”

Infinity Culinary Training teaches basic cooking skills and life skills, providing young adults from Cape Town’s most impoverished neighborhoods with the professional tools necessary for employment in the hospitality industry. The LG Home Chef Championship contestants showed the students essential methods for preparing nutritionally balanced, great-tasting dishes. The occasion gave the young students an opportunity to show off their love of cooking to an audience of experienced peers. In addition, LG donated its premium Lightwave Convection Ovens used in the LG-HCC to the not-for-profit school.

As part of this year’s event, LG donated USD 100,000 to the United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) women’s empowerment activities*. The WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. LG Electronics has been a partner in WFP’s important global work since 2009.
The 14 nations represented in this year’s competition included Colombia, France, India, Iran, Malaysia, Morocco, Panama, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates and the host, South Africa.

* The WFP’s Women’s Empowerment Activities help at-risk women in the Democratic Republic of Congo to stand on their own feet by teaching and training them the skills to make stoves while providing them with much needed food provisions.
