BERLIN, GERMANY - Lesswire, a leading supplier of wireless connectivity solutions for OEMs, appliance manufacturers and system integrators, today presented a new generation of wireless modules for implementing applications with high requirements on the bandwidth available in vehicles and commercial environments.

The embedded wireless module called WiBear 11ac, besides having the 5th generation WLAN standard, IEEE 802.11 ac, also features the Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy and 2.1 + EDR standards as well as Near-Field-Communication (NFC) in a single module.

“With the WiBear 11ac module we are offering our customers the next generation of the most-used wireless standards in the car as an easy to integrate module. In conjunction with our Connected Car Platform, we will thereby further extend our good position in the Connected & Networked Car sector,” says Dr. Ralph Meyfarth, CEO of lesswire AG.

Lesswire enables HD video streaming in vehicles

The WiBear 11ac wireless module provides the necessary bandwidth for implementing video streaming applications in vehicles. The WLAN 802.11 ac standard allows data to be supplied to several displays with a resolution of up to 1080p. As a dual frequency module, the WiBear 11ac also makes it possible to use the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band simultaneously for communications. Video data can therefore be transmitted on the 5 GHz band without interference from other applications.

Fit for the future with Bluetooth 4.0 LE and NFC

With Bluetooth 4.0 LE and NFC, the module provides two other communication standards that are of importance in the car. In this way, for example, consumer devices, such as smartphones or pads, can connect more easily with the vehicle via Bluetooth LE. The module's NFC interface, combined with mobile devices, enables access to the vehicle and convenience functions such as making personalised presettings on the driver's seat.

Prepared for automotive and industrial markets

The WiBear 11ac wireless module features an extended temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The module fulfils the demanding requirements made by the automotive industry with regard to development and approval. With a guaranteed availability of 6+ years, the module is also of interest to industrial integrators.

Availability

The module will be presented to the public at the Embedded World trade fair, which takes place from 25 - 27 February 2014 in Nuremberg. Engineering samples will be available towards the end of the 2nd quarter of 2014.
