Pushing for a Bid to Lead Internet Economy

The ministerial IT meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will be held next year in Seoul for the first time since it was held in Ottawa ten years ago.

The Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea announced that they will hold the OECD ministerial meeting for the future of internet economy at COEX in Seoul, on the 17th to 18th of June 2008 keeping an eye on the fact that internet has been becoming the basis of all economic activities.

The Ministers of communication, economy and industry, CEOs of global businesses and citizen's groups from 30 member countries and 15 non-member countries will take part in this OECD ministerial meeting. It is ten years after the OECD ministerial meeting was held in Ottawa, Canada, 1998 with the agenda of Ecommerce.

The Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea won the bid for the meeting last October and will have a meeting for interested people to gather their various opinions. They will reflect the results of to the ministerial officials and organize a Committee of Information and Communication to reflect the Statement of Seoul and Recommendation of Policies smoothly in OECD affairs.

The Government of Korea is not only seeking a successful OECD ministerial meeting itself, but is also trying to make the basis of international cooperation that will lead the internet economy for the next ten years.

For this purpose, the Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea will arrange programs to liaise with major economic groups at home and abroad, and proceed with many necessary tasks such as celebrity invitations. Also, through many academic forums and opinion gathering from many experts in the industrial and academic fields and related governmental officials, they will reflect the vision of Korea and policy demands in the main results of the ministerial meeting. The list of celebrities invited by this meeting includes Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General; Carlos Miguel Gutierrez, Secretary of the US Department of Commerce; Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission; Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google; Wang Xudong, Minister of Information Industry of China; Keith Rupert Murdoch, Chairman of News Corporation; and Muhammad Yunus, the winner of Nobel peace prize.

The agenda and meeting preparation will be discussed through the ICCP which will be held in Canada this October and the ICCP Summit which will be held in Paris in March 2008. In preparation for the OECD ministerial meeting in Seoul in 2008, the Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea opened the homepage www.oecdministerialseoul2008. org on the 22nd and it will be a place where people exchange opinions globally.

The Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea will gather various opinions of internet users from all over the world on the agenda of the ministerial meeting until January, 2008 through this homepage.
