CAMBRIDGE, UK - I hope that you enjoyed Part 1 of this piece (http://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/what-you-will-learn-at-supercapacitors-europe-2014-00006336.asp), where we discussed some of the relevant presentations to be held at the Supercapacitors Europe 2014 show and its relevance to two of the largest application markets for supercapacitors: consumer electronics and automotive.

Supercapacitors have a role in delivering high power and protecting both batteries and fuel cells in consumer electronics, the automotive and the larger vehicle and industrial machines sectors. At our USA 2013 show, VISEDO, one of the leading companies in designing electric drive trains for agricultural and industrial machines presented how supercapacitors can improve the productivity of industrial hybrid machines to 40% and reduce energy consumption by 30%. At our European event, we will follow up on the topic of supercapacitors in electric vehicles with a presentation from 4ESYS, who will speak about the real experience benefits of dynamic energy storage systems, based on supercapacitors for commercial hybrid buses and trucks.

IDTechEx will also be hosting the INTRASME project workshop on electric vehicle market opportunity (www.instrasme.eu)  This is a European Commission sponsored forum whose objective is to provide a platform for small and medium enterprises, who are developing innovative technologies for the electric vehicle sector.  A chance to gather and discuss the opportunities in this exciting industry. This workshop is scheduled on the 3 April and is open to all interested delegates. (www.idtechex.com/supercapacitors-europe/intrasme-agenda.asp)

IDTechEx is closely following the development of new materials for supercapacitors, including carbon nanomaterials, such as Graphene and Carbon Nanotubes. We will have a session on the Graphene opportunity in Supercapacitors with speakers sharing their latest progress in the implementation of this wonder material for energy storage technologies.  Speakers will include: Thales Group, Graphenea, Graphene Batteries and OCSiAL. In this area, Spain's National Institute of Carbon will provide an overview of characteristics and performance from different forms of carbons used in supercapacitor electrodes, including activated carbons, carbon gels, carbide derived carbons, carbon nanotubes and Graphene.

IDTechEx's Supercapacitors conferences have been the forum to present new trends in cost-effective environmentally friendlier materials and this year we will continue with this.  Hutchinson will be presenting on safer inorganic based supercapacitors; Poznan University of Technology discussing how they are closing the performance gap between aqueous and organic electrolyte based supercapacitors and finally a presentation by WWU Munster about the environmental advantages of new materials with the case of natural cellulose as an alternative binder for high voltage supercapacitors.  A Supercapacitors performance does not only rely on electrodes and electrolytes, but also on separators.  Dreamweaver Europe will speak about their thin nanofiber separator which can allow high power supercapacitor performance based on their very low resistance.

IDTechEx will present the latest progress of the leading European supercapacitor companies including Hutchinson Technologies, Skeleton Technologies and Yunasko. Leading international companies will join the event as well, including Cap-XX from Australia and JSR Micro. In this session UC Davis will speak about the different methods for measuring performance in supercapacitors and the latest performance results measured in many supercapacitors available in the market, therefore expect interesting discussions from the supercapacitor manufacturers that will be present.

Finally, given that developing manufacturing technology is as important as developing new performance materials, IDTechEx will offer a space for innovative approaches and solutions in supercapacitor manufacturing. In this topic we will have VTT presenting their supercapacitor manufacturing process by printing technology and the performance of the manufactured product (electrical properties and lifetime). Enerize Corporation present their solutions to test the safety and reliability of supercapacitors during the manufacturing process that replace destructive methods, a very important step in assuring the quality and performance at large scale manufacturing.

Supercapacitors Europe 2014 (www.IDTechEx.com/SCEurope) is the place to be to learn about the new emerging energy storage industry.
