SEOUL, KOREA - The weekly sales of the Galaxy S5, a brand-new smartphone released worldwide on April 11 by Samsung Electronics, turned out to have exceeded those of Apple iPhone 5S. U.S. market research firm Localytics announced on April 23 that the Galaxy S5 accounted for 0.7 percent in the world’s Android smartphone market in just one week after it was launched.

 

Localytics explained that this can be comparable to the weekly market share of Apple iPhone 5. When iPhone 5S was released first in October 2013, its share in the total iPhone market rose to 1.1 percent in just one week.

Until last year, Android occupied a share of 78.9 percent in the global smartphone market (Strategy Analytics figures). In other words, eight out of ten smartphones selling in the world are Android smartphones. Of the total, Samsung smartphones held a share of 65 percent. 

During the same period, Apple’s market share stood at 14.9 percent. A simple numerical calculation shows that Samsung’s share in the global smartphone market is about 3.3-folds higher than that of Apple. It can be interpreted that the weekly sales of the Galaxy S5 is twice higher than those of the Apple iPhone 5S.
