The 2014 IT 21 Global Conference Revs up the Government’s Creative Economy Initiative

SEOUL, KOREA - The 2014 IT 21 Global Conference kicked off on May 8 at the National Information Society Agency (NIA). Under the theme “Digital Planet and the Future of National Informatization, the two-day event, hosted by the Korea Information Processing Society (KIPS), featured a slew of presentations on future technologies and desirable future policy directions, made by top notch speakers, who have been at the forefront of the S. Korean government’s creative economy initiative.

The 2014 IT 21 Global Conference was divided into five tracks (Software & SDx, Smart Medicine, Big Data, IoT (Internet of Things) and Korea-Russia CIO Summit) and into two tutorials (Cloud Security and Big Data Analysis). Conference attendees, including technology executives from leading companies in each sector and various experts, opined on how to respond to the spread of foreign-developed technologies and shared their views on future trends of technology development.

Above all, Track 3 (the Korea-Russia CIO Summit), which CIOs from Russia took part in, was quite a practical program, designed to spur on overseas market entry and successful tip-ups between S. Korean and Russian companies. Thus, the Korea-Russia CIO Summit was expected to give much impetus to the S. Korean government’s creative economy initiative by substantially fostering relevant industries and expediting overseas market entry.

The Track 1 (Software & SDAnything) was dedicated to shedding light on the characteristics and limitations of Software Defined Anything (SDx) from the perspectives of academia, industry and communities. SDx has recently basked in great attention as a technology that can make improvements to the infrastructures of cloud computing services.

Track 2 (Smart Medicine) revolved around ways to support smart medical information services, which offer varied services in an interconnected manner, from hospital-led e-health, patient-oriented u-healthcare and informatization strategies regarding tele-health to this smart era’s smart medical treatments and health management, medical counseling and education. Track 3 (Korea-Russia CIO Summit) was designed to go over the current status of smart education and e-learning technologies in both S. Korea and Russia and to seek a better way forward by sharing each nation’s best practices.

Track 4 (Big Data), scheduled for the second day (May 9), was about forecasting the future with big data, introducing the concept and value of big data curation, discussing the practical use of big data in various sectors, from medicine and communications to finance and security.

Track 5 was committed to IoT (Internet of Things)), which is projected to revolutionize our socioeconomic landscape over the next decade. Diverse IoT applications were introduced and the past, present and future of IoT technology were discussed. The tutorials were divided largely into two: cloud security and big data analysis. Cloud security, trends in the big data industry and ways to tackle security threats were dealt with.

“The Korea Information Processing Society (KIPS) will ensure smooth information exchanges among the government, academia and industry, discover growth engine projects and put forward a new vision, with a view to preparing the nation for future ICT convergence technologies. The 2014 IT 21 Global Conference is the pinnacle of KIPS’s such efforts. This conference will help industry, academia and research institutes play a pivotal role in cementing the nation’s international standing as the world’s ICT powerhouse,”Cho Sung-kap, President of KIPS, said in his opening address.

Following President Cho’s opening address, Chang Kwang-soo, President of the National Information Society Agency (NIA), Kim Heung-nam, President of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Park Sung-deuk, Chairman of National Association of Hacking & Security (NAHS)and former vice minister ofinformation and communications, delivered their words of encouragement.

The conference’s speaker line-up included Jeff Apcar (Distinguished Fellow and Engineer of Cisco Systems Inc., USA), Slavin Boris (Director of SMART Technologies Center, Russia), Park Yong-woo, IBM Korea Director, and Cho Seung-won (Chief of SK Telecom’s B2B Business Headquarters). Panel discussions on the issue of protecting personal information and challenges also took place, furnishing officials from the government, academia and industry with great opportunities to share their opinions with one another.

At the panel discussions, mediated by Ahn Mun-seok, emeritus professor at Korea University, Kang Seung-joo, Director General of the IT Strategy Bureau at the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and Lim Jong-in, Head of the Graduate School of Information Protection at Korea University made presentations. Among the panelists were Kim Kook-jin (from Personal Information Protection Commission), Jeong Jin-wook (President of the Ethics Council on Internet), Park Seung-jeong (Editor-in-chief of the Electronic Times) and Lee Joon-ho (Director of NHN Entertainment).
