SEOUL, KOREA - A port development project sought by the government has borne fruit. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said on May 18 that Daewoo Engineering & Construction signed an agreement with Djen Djen Port Authority of Algeria to build container berths. The project calls for developing container port facilities in Djen Djen, a port city 340 kilometers east of Algiers, capable of harboring up to 14,000 TEU containerships.

 

This is one of the success cases by the oceans ministry to take on overseas port development projects. As early as 2012, the Korean ministry signed with the Algerian transport ministry to conduct a joint feasibility study project on six port locations in the North African country. The Djen Djen port construction project was part of this plan and the ministry expects there will be more projects coming once the Djen Djen project is successfully pulled off.

 

Park Joon-kwon, ports and harbors bureau chief at the ministry, said, "Algeria is one of the fastest growing construction markets for Korean builders. We will step up our effort to win follow-up orders and increase personnel exchange."
