SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics joined hands with SK Telecom to develop 5G telecommunications technology that can download a full HD movie file (4 GB) within 1-2 seconds.
The two companies revealed their partnership plan for development of the 5G technology at the World IT Show 2014, the largest ICT exhibition in Korea organized by the Korea Economic Daily that opened at BEXCO in Busan on October 20.
Under the terms of the partnership, they will promote cooperation in various areas, including standardization in and outside Korea, the selection of bandwidth, and the development of small relay stations and large-capacity antennas.
The 5G service, which is expected to be commercialized in 2020, will offer a speed of more than 30 gigabytes per second.This is 400 times faster than LTE which offers a speed of 75 megabytes per second and 130 times faster than broadband LTE-A which offers a speed of 225 MB per second.
n other words, the 5G technology would contribute to reducing the time needed to download a full HD movie from more than 2 minutes to 1 second.
