"We will invest 300 billion won in Jeju Island by 2017 to create the full electric car charging infrastructure. Our aim is to reach 50,000 EVs in Jeju alone." As of the end of 2014, the number of electric vehicles running in the island was 860.
Kim Dae-hwan, president of the Korea Electric Vehicle Expo, said this, adding, "Next year, we will increase the EV number to 5,000 in Jeju and reach the goal of 50,000 by 2017 by surpassing the earlier goal of 29,000. If the Seoul city government achieves the goal of reaching 50,000 EVs by the same year, we will have a total of more than 100,000 EVs across the country."
The Organizing Committee for the EV expo has received a total of 900 million won including the 500-million-won subsidies from the central government and the 400-million-won support fund from the Jeju provincial government.
In the second EV expo to be held for ten days between March 6 and 15 in Jeju, as many as 40 EV makers including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, and Renault Samsung as well as foreign car makers such as BMW, Nissan, BYD, and Detroit Electric will display their electric cars.
