Starting from the end of this month, a security program called ActiveX, which has been required for all online shopping, will be removed for good. Furthermore, simple payment that uses no security program will become available from the end of next month.

According to credit card industry sources on March 23, major card companies, including Shinhan, Hyundai, Lotte, Samsung, Hana, and NH Nonghyup, will launch a new alternative software program and remove their existing ActiveX from March 26.

Shinhan, Hyundai, and NH Nonghyup will implement an “exe”-type security program from March 26. Lotte will release its own ActiveX-replacing alternative program on March 28, followed by Samsung and Hana on March 30.

The front-runners are BC Card and Woori Card which removed ActiveX in December 2014 and February 2015, respectively.

ActiveX is a security program that can be downloaded only through the Internet Explorer browser. It has been adopted as a standard security program in Korea where the Internet Explorer is the mainstream browser.
