The Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference 2015 is expected to find ways to reach a public consensus on how to take the atomic power industry to new heights.

The 30th Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference, the largest annual event dedicated to atomic energy in S. Korea, has kicked off its two-day journey (April 28-29) at COEX InterContinental Seoul.

Under the theme “Towards Another 30 Years: Atoms for People,” the 30th Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference was held Tuesday with nearly 600 people in attendance, such as policymakers on nuclear energy from eight countries (including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and the Czech Republic) and relevant industry officials and academic experts.

Global atomic energy experts took part in heated discussions to explore ways to ramp up global cooperation for the sustainable growth of the nuclear power industry at the Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference 2015. In particular, the major goal of this year’s gathering is to share information on nuclear technologies and safety measures, policy; and experiences in enhancing public support for nuclear energy and to transfer such expertise to emerging economies in a bid to soup up the atomic energy industry.

Delivering an opening address, Cho Suk, chairman of the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) and also CEO of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP), put emphasis on “atom for people” and said that the nuclear energy industry should go beyond simply chanting ‘peaceful development’ towards striking a chord with the public and actually being part of their lives.

“I hope this event offers us the opportunity to look back on the past three decades and contemplate ways to win public support for nuclear power for the next 30 years. The atomic energy industry should scale up its safety measures and need to focus on communicating with the public and reaching a social consensus,” said Chairman Cho.

“In order to win public sympathy, the atomic energy industry has to share everything with the public and put itself in the public’s shoes. The S. Korea government will faithfully do its part to help the nuclear power industry get back on track to sustainable growth,” said Vice-Minister Lee Suk-joon of Science, ICT and Future Planning in his congratulatory address.

“S. Korea has been running its nuclear power plants in a safe manner since we built Kori-1, the nation’s first nuclear power plant, back in 1979. Such a clean slate has been possible thanks to the painstaking efforts you all have made so far,” said Min Byung-Joo, a member of the National Assembly of South Korea (the ruling Saenuri Party).

“I hope this gathering will pave the way for creating communication channels between the nuclear energy industry and the public and you will share your expertise in nuclear power policies and nuclear safety with one another for the sake of the sustainable growth of the industry,” added lawmaker Min Byung-joo.

Following lawmaker Min’s speech, Jeong Geun-mo, former science and technology minister, delivered a special lecture on this year’s theme “Towards Another 30 Years: Atoms for People.

The Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference 2015, scheduled to wrap up on Wednesday, is divided into three plenary sessions: Session I - Public Outreach: Gateway to Restarting the Atomic Engine; Session II- The Challenge for Sustainable Development of Nuclear Power; and Session III - Nuclear Energy for the Future. Approximately 30 atomic power experts from home and abroad will lead the sessions to discuss where the nuclear industry stands and where it is headed.

Meanwhile, the winners of the Korea Atomic Energy Technology Award (a citation from the minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning) and of the Korea Atomic Energy Contribution Award (from the chairman of the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF)) were announced at the award ceremony, held during the opening ceremony for the Korea Atomic Power Annual Conference 2015 on Tuesday.
