A study showed that the global computer monitor market continues to contract, while the TV monitor market has been on a steady rise.
Considering that the global TV monitor market is dominated by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the Korean companies' strategy of jumping early into the market segments has paid off.
According to market research firm IDC on June 28, the global TV monitor market is forecast to grow 11 percent next year, with its share in overall monitor market likely to reach 6.4 percent. This year's TV monitor sales are forecast to rise 5.4 percent.
TV monitor refers to a type of monitor which is embedded with a TV tuner. It can be used as a desktop computer monitor and turned into a TV anytime. TV monitors are usually cheaper than general-use TVs.
According to IDC, Samsung and LG each had a market share of 55 percent and 41 percent in the global TV monitor market in the first quarter of this year.
In contrast to the rapid growth of the TV monitor market, the PC monitor market has been on a declining path, with the sales of PC monitors estimated at 29.46 million units in the first quarter of this year, down 12 percent year on year.
