German Ambassador Dr. Hans-Ulrich Seidt

The 3rd of October is a national day - in Korea as well as in Germany. Whereas Korea celebrates the foundation of its people in 2333 B.C., our national day is much younger. It is the day of German Unity which we celebrate since 1990. I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate the readers of the IT Times to their national day and shortly dwell on the history of ours.

This year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. In its aftermath the first free and fair elections were held in East Germany. The East German parliament then adopted a resolution by an overwhelming majority, which paved the way for the formal accession of the German Democratic Republic to the Federal Republic of Germany on 3rd October 1990.

The German Unification would not have been imaginable let alone possible without the preceding peaceful revolutions in Central Eastern Europe and the Perestroika Policy of the Gorbachev era. It thus was part of the European democratic movement. Equally important was the support and confidence from our allies and partners. We are in particular grateful to our Korean friends who consistently supported the idea of German Unity.

It is often mentioned that Germany and Korea have shared the fate of being a divided nation. However, our bilateral relations are also based on a wide range of cooperation in economy and science. Companies from both countries share partnerships in a vast number of areas reaching state of the art levels. Both sides have ample opportunities to learn from each other on an equal footing. Recent numbers show that both our countries have been coping well with the financial and economic crisis, continuously stressing the importance of open markets. I hope that we will be able stay on this positive path and that our cooperation and friendship will further increase in the future!
