The number of Samsung Electronics' employees has dropped for the last five years while the number of its executives has risen during the same period, according to industry data.

According to the report analyzing South Korea's top 100 companies published by research firm Korea CXO Institute, Samsung Electronics topped the list in the number of employees, having around 1,100 executives and 99,000 employees.

The report said the number of employees per one executive in the firm stood at 83.1, lower than the average number of 106. Thus, the executives account for 1.2 percent of its total employees.

In 2011, the smartphone maker had around 100,000 employees along with 966 executives. At the time, the executives accounted for less than 1 percent of the total employees.

Compared to five years ago, Samsung Electronics saw the number of its employees fall due to massive restructuring but the number of executives has still risen.

By the top 100 companies, the number of executives rose 4.7 percent to 309 and the employees went up 6.2 percent to 3,351 during the same period.

"Higher number of executives is like two sides of the same coin," said Korea CXO Institute’s chief Oh Il-sun.

"If there are less number of executives, employees may have more opportunities to be promoted. But, the company can be inefficient and less competitive," he added.

In the lead-up to conglomerates' restructuring seasons, Samsung Electronics are rumored to have massive downsizing of its executive.
