Samsung Electronics said on October 12 that it had donated US$1 million for the upkeep of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Samsung Electronics’ donation will ensure the continued upkeep and care of the memorial grounds, including the 19 sculptures representing members of the U.S. Armed Forces who engaged in combat, the Memorial Wall filled with more than 2,500 etched photos depicting personnel and scenes of the war, and the Pool of Remembrance dedicated to those killed, wounded or missing in action.

The donation was delivered to Ret. Colonel William E. Weber, chairman of the KWVMF, in a ceremony held on October 9 at the Rayburn Congressional building. Those attending the ceremony included Reps. Charles B. Rangel, Xavier Becerra and Ralph Abraham as well as Kim Won-kyong, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics North America.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), who himself is a Korean War veteran commented, “Samsung and the appreciation of the Korean people for the United States’ role in the Korean War is a message for humankind, the world and for all who have endured any sacrifice. Samsung didn’t have to do this – but to those of us who still feel that Americans should at least know about those who served and sacrificed their lives in the Korean War, this kind gesture by a corporation is so well, and so emotionally, received.”

This year Samsung Electronics America’s National Day of Service is October 16. Regional U.S. employees from the electronics giant will join with veterans and volunteers in doing some cleaning and maintenance work for the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Samsung Electronics America has been supporting Korean War veterans and their families as part of its CSR activities.

Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of US$5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program has awarded college scholarships to nearly 1,900 students who are direct descendants of U.S. war veterans.

In 2013, Samsung was honored for its years of dedication to this cause with the American Legion’s prestigious Patriot Award.
