Competition is heating up among Korea’s big-three telecom companies including SK Telecom, LG U+, and KT to secure 5G telecommunications technologies.
SK Telecom announced on February 14 that it will demonstrate its own 5G mobile telecom technology with a 20-Gbps per-second speed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) for the first time in the world. The MWC is scheduled to be held in Barcelona in Spain from February 22.
The 20-Gbps speed is the lowest 5G telecom speed according to the definition set by the International Telecommunications Union. This is about 67 times faster than the existing 4G LTE which has a 300-Mbps speed. At last year’s MWC, SK Telecom showcased a 7.55-Gbps 5G technology and a disaster rescue robot.
Choi Jin-sung, CTO of SK Telecom, plans to make a presentation about his company's 5G roadmap, its industrial value, and benefits at the 5G conference slated to be held from February 22 to 23 at the MWC venue.
He will hold talks with his counterparts from global ICT companies, including Nokia and Ericsson about ways to promote further cooperation in 5G telecommunication areas.
