CJ CGV, S. Korea's largest multiplex cinema chain operator, said on May 30 that it had opened its 20th multiplex, named ‘CGV Blitz Sleepy,’ on May 26 in western Jakarta, Indonesia. The number of CGV Blitz multiplexes in Indonesia hit 20 in just two years as CJ CGV’s differentiation strategies, many believe, worked out well.
CGV Blitz Sleepy, located at Slipi Jaya Plaza (a large shopping mall situated at the center of an office town and residential complexes), has four screens and 674 seats. CGV Blitz Sleepy celebrated its first opening weekend by mounting a differentiated marketing campaign: movie stars showed up for their movie premieres and acoustic music concerts were held.
Since January 2014 CJ CGV has been operating Indonesia's second-largest movie chain Blitz Megaplex. The number of CGV Blitz multiplexes has increased to 20 with 143 screens over the past 2 years and 4 months. A CGV Blitz official said: “Though we are still trailing XXI, which makes up 75 percent of the market in terms of the number of screens, we’ve at least laid the foundation for becoming the largest multiplex cinema chain operator in Indonesia.”
CJ CGV aims to open eight more multiplexes in Indonesia this year and raise sales to 60 billion won. Last year, 19 CGV Blitz multiplexes grossed 34 billion won in sales. CJ CGV also plans to jack up the number of customers to over 10 million this year.
